X starts testing free access to Grok

Elon Musk's Grok is finally breaking out of its paid fortress.

Over the weekend, app watchers spotted a free version of Grok surfacing in select regions. TechCrunch subsequently confirmed that X is at least testing free access for users in New Zealand.

Guardrails on the free ride

It is not a completely open tap. According to app researcher Swak on X, the free tier comes with tight rate limits.

Users get 10 queries every two hours on the flagship Grok-2 model, and 20 queries every two hours on the smaller Grok-2 mini. Image analysis queries are capped at just three per day.

To keep bot farms at bay, X also requires eligible accounts to be at least seven days old and tied to a verified phone number.

xAI launched Grok-2 in August featuring FLUX.1 image generation, and added vision understanding late last month. Until now, all of these perks required an active Premium or Premium+ subscription.

Why it matters

For regular users, this lowers the bar to test a frontier model without coughing up a monthly fee, even if the strict rate limits make it strictly a casual tool.

For xAI, keeping Grok locked behind a social network paywall was becoming a tactical liability. Rival platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini built massive leads by letting millions of people kick the tires for free.

With The Wall Street Journal reporting last month that xAI is in talks to raise billions at a $40 billion valuation, opening the gates looks like an obvious play. To justify that price tag, xAI needs a much broader user base and faster feedback loops.
