Grok 3 goes free for a short time

Published Reach 52

Elon Musk just made xAI's flagship Grok 3 model temporarily free for everyone, no subscription required. Users can test drive the new "Think" reasoning and "DeepSearch" modes across the web and app, though paying tiers still keep server priority, voice mode, and the extra-heavy Big Brain features.

Elon Musk just dropped the paywall on xAI's newest flagship AI, Grok 3, making it free for everyone to try. The only catch? Musk says it is only free for a short time, without specifying when the window closes.

To take it for a spin, users just need to pick Grok 3 from the dropdown menu in the Grok web interface, standalone app, or on X. It gives everyone immediate access to the new Think reasoning tool and the DeepSearch research engine.

Brute force from Memphis

Grok 3 was originally slated to launch late last year, but xAI took extra time to cook it inside its massive Memphis data center packed with around 200,000 GPUs. Musk claims the model was trained with roughly ten times the computing power of Grok 2, fed on a dataset that even expanded into court filings.

According to xAI, Grok 3 beats GPT-4o on benchmarks like AIME for math and GPQA for science. Its dedicated reasoning variant, Grok 3 Reasoning, reportedly edged out OpenAI's o3-mini-high on AIME 2025.

When tackling tough code or math, users can click Think to trigger a step-by-step reasoning process similar to OpenAI o-series models or DeepSeek R1. Meanwhile, DeepSearch acts like an autonomous analyst, scouring the web and X in real time to assemble research briefs.

Notably, Musk admitted xAI is obscuring parts of Grok's raw thought process in the app. The goal is to stop rival labs from distilling Grok 3's reasoning data, a practice under heavy scrutiny after recent AI controversies.

What is free vs. what stays paid

Free access is generous, but there are clear boundaries. Free users will run into server throttling when traffic spikes, and they cannot access every feature.

Paying subscribers get priority queueing and unlimited image generation. That applies to standalone SuperGrok subscribers paying $30 per month, as well as X Premium+ members (listed at $40 monthly by Engadget and $50 by TechCrunch).

Paid accounts also unlock Big Brain mode, which commits extra compute to chew through grueling math and engineering problems. A new voice mode is also slated to roll out to paid users first within about a week, with enterprise API access following shortly after.

Musk also confirmed xAI's release cadence: once Grok 3 matures in a few months, the company plans to open-source Grok 2.

Why it matters

We think dropping Grok 3 for free is an aggressive play to seize back the narrative after DeepSeek shook the AI landscape. Training on 200,000 GPUs is an impressive brute-force flex, but benchmarks do not mean much until millions of daily users kick the tires.

For everyday users and builders, this is an easy win right now. You get frontier-grade reasoning and live research without opening your wallet, making it well worth testing on tricky codebases and open-ended research questions where X's live pulse adds real value.

However, the strategy carries real friction. Brute-force frontier models carry eye-watering inference bills, and if server congestion starts choking free queries, the buzz could turn into frustration fast.

It looks like xAI is betting that a taste of state-of-the-art capability will turn casual fence-sitters into recurring $30-a-month SuperGrok subscribers before the free window snaps shut.
