Grok-2 gets 3x faster and goes free for all X users
Grok just rolled out a faster, sharper version of Grok-2 to everyone on X for free. The upgraded model runs three times faster with better accuracy and multilingual support, while bundling web search, citations, and the Aurora image model. Developers also get updated API endpoints at lower token pricing.

If you wanted to chat with Grok on X, you had to cough up a monthly subscription. Until now.
xAI just announced that it is rolling out an updated version of Grok-2 to all users on X completely for free. According to the company, this refreshed build was quietly tested over the past few weeks and runs three times faster while sharpening its accuracy, instruction-following, and multilingual responses. Premium and Premium+ subscribers still keep higher usage caps and early access to future drops.
Real-time search, photorealism, and a timeline button
The update turns Grok into a far more native fixture across the 𝕏 feed rather than just a standalone chatbot tab.
Grok now supports real-time web search with clickable source citations. Instead of just analyzing internal posts, the assistant combines real-time X discussions with live webpages across the broader internet to source and corroborate answers.
On the creative front, xAI integrated Aurora, its cutting-edge autoregressive image generation model, aiming for photorealistic meme-making and artwork. That engine powers a viral feature called "draw me", which turns user profile data into reimagined stylized avatars. When users share their results, followers see a one-click button to make their own.
There is also a brand-new dedicated Grok button arriving directly on home timeline posts. Tapping it lets users instantly pull background context, unpack fast-moving breaking news, or analyze viral arguments without leaving their feed.
For builders, xAI added two new checkpoints to its enterprise API: grok-2-1212 and grok-2-vision-1212. Backed by the new efficiency gains, pricing dropped to $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, alongside $25 in free trial credits. The Aurora image generation model is scheduled to hit the API in the coming weeks.
Why it matters
We think dropping the paywall on Grok-2 is a major strategic pivot for xAI.
For everyday users, the move bridges the gap between passive social scrolling and instant AI assistance. Instead of copying a confusing tweet into ChatGPT to understand what happened, the Grok button sits directly on the timeline. Combined with viral hooks like "draw me", xAI is treating conversational AI not as an enterprise tool, but as a consumer toy that anyone can play with right away.
For the broader industry, Grok's unfair advantage has always been real-time cultural telemetry from X. By making the assistant free, xAI turns hundreds of millions of lurkers into active testers, generating a massive firehose of prompt-response pairs to train future models at minimal distribution cost.
Slashing API pricing to $2/$10 also puts direct pressure on rival frontier models. However, we see potential friction ahead. Tripling inference speed is impressive, but opening the floodgates to free users will test xAI's infrastructure to its limits. Relying on live social posts for real-time answers also carries an inherent risk of hallucinating or amplifying internet rumors, meaning citation verification will be under intense scrutiny.
