Elon Musk makes Grok free for all X users

You no longer need to pay for an X subscription to chat with Elon Musk's AI.

Several free users on X noticed on Friday that the Grok chatbot is now open to non-paying accounts. Free users get a limit of up to 10 messages every two hours.

Opening the gates

xAI originally launched Grok last year as a humorous assistant, keeping it exclusively locked behind X's Premium paywall.

In August, Grok gained text-to-image capabilities, which quickly stirred debate after producing several controversial images. TechCrunch reported last month that xAI had started testing a free tier in select regions, and now that rollout is spreading widely.

Fresh off a $6 billion funding round, xAI is also reportedly weighing a standalone mobile app for Grok, according to The Wall Street Journal, matching the dedicated presence of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

Why it matters

For everyday users, the friction to try Grok is finally gone. You do not need an active credit card or a verified checkmark anymore, even if the 10-prompt ceiling every two hours limits any serious workflow.

We think this pivot was long overdue. Locking Grok inside a paid subscription gave it zero chance against free heavyweights like ChatGPT and Gemini, which are capturing the vast majority of consumer queries and training data.

Rolling out free access while exploring a standalone app suggests xAI realizes Grok cannot just be a perk for X subscribers if it wants to be a top-tier frontier model. The real challenge now is managing compute costs and content guardrails once the floodgates open.
