Musk's Grok lands on X next week
Elon Musk just confirmed that xAI's chatbot Grok will roll out to all X Premium+ subscribers sometime next week. Alongside its rebellious persona, Grok's biggest hook is real-time access to X's platform data. Why it matters: Musk is betting on AI to juice subscription sign-ups, though locking Grok behind a $16-a-month paywall could test user appetite.

Right after OpenAI wrapped up its wild boardroom soap opera, Elon Musk decided it was time to drop his own AI into the arena.
Musk confirmed that xAI's new chatbot, Grok, will officially roll out to X Premium+ subscribers sometime next week.
Leaked code and spicy answers
The rollout was spoiled a few days earlier by app researcher Nima Owji, who shared screenshots of Grok integrated directly into the X web app at twitter.com/i/grok. The interface featured an "Ask Grok" prompt box and an upsell banner urging non-paying users to upgrade.
Musk quickly chimed in with a simple confirmation on X. While Musk's launch timelines are notoriously flexible, the live code inside the web app suggests this launch is actually on track.
Grok was first handed to a tight group of testers on November 4. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, xAI designed Grok with a self-proclaimed rebellious streak and a bit of wit, explicitly promising to answer spicy questions that mainstream bots typically censor.
Its real hook is real-time access to the firehose of posts on X, alongside broader web search capabilities. That means while other models stumble over today's news, Grok can theoretically pull up live context straight from your feed.
The launch also rekindles an old rivalry. Sam Altman previously roasted Grok on X, sharing a mock screenshot of a custom GPT programmed with cringey boomer humor. Musk fired back, labeling GPT-4 as GPT-Snore and claiming humor is banned at OpenAI.
Locking AI behind the top tier
Instead of making Grok a standalone app or giving it away for free, Musk is locking it behind X's most expensive subscription: the $16 per month Premium+ tier.
X recently split its paid plans into three tiers: a $3 Basic tier, the standard $8 tier, and the $16 Premium+ plan, which removes ads from main feeds and offers creator monetization tools.
Adding Grok to the $16 tier is a calculated business move. With major advertisers fleeing X amid controversies surrounding Musk's posts and platform moderation, X desperately needs direct consumer revenue. Grok is effectively the shiny hook to get tech-curious users to pay up.
Why it matters
We think putting Grok behind a $16 paywall is a smart growth lever for X, but a double-edged sword for AI safety.
For everyday users, $16 a month is a steep entry ticket, especially when ChatGPT Plus sits at $20 and offers a mature ecosystem. Unless you already spend hours scrolling X or genuinely want real-time commentary, paying solely for Grok's snarky personality might not feel worth it on day one.
For the AI landscape, Grok represents the first major model to ditch the corporate PR voice. Every big tech lab has tuned its assistants to sound politely neutered, and xAI is leaning hard into irreverence as its primary moat.
The real risk lies in Grok's reliance on real-time X data. The platform moves fast, but it is also flooded with misinformation, rumors, and unverified takes. If a chatbot designed to be witty and spicy starts parroting unvetted social media posts as ground truth, hallucinations will be the least of its problems. Finding the line between personality and reliable intelligence is going to be Musk's hardest test yet.
