xAI's Grok unlocks free voice mode for all iOS users
xAI just rolled out its Voice Mode to all iOS users on the Grok app for free, removing the need for a paid subscription. The update brings natural conversational AI straight to any iOS device running the official app. It is a clear push to grab daily voice users from rival assistants.
Chatting naturally with an AI usually means ponying up for a monthly premium subscription. xAI is taking a hammer to that barrier.
According to an announcement by @ebbyamir on X, Voice Mode is now available for free to all iOS users on the standalone Grok app, with no paid subscription required.
Grok drops the voice paywall
Anyone who downloads the Grok app from the Apple App Store can jump straight into a spoken conversation right away.
While rivals have traditionally guarded expressive voice features behind high-tier paywalls, xAI is putting voice interaction directly into free users' pockets.
Why it matters
For everyday users, this means instant access to a hands-free conversational assistant without committing to another monthly bill. If you need quick answers while commuting or multitasking, the barrier to entry is now officially zero.
From an industry perspective, rivals like OpenAI have leaned on voice as a major selling point for paid tiers. Giving voice away for free is a sharp growth move by xAI to quickly capture mobile screen time and habituate mainstream users.
Still, running voice inference at scale is notoriously expensive. We think the real test will be whether xAI can sustain smooth response times and low latency under free load without quietly adding rate limits down the line.
