xAI makes Grok 4 free worldwide with upcoming ads

Published Reach 57

xAI just made its latest Grok 4 model freely accessible to all users worldwide, escalating the battle against OpenAI's GPT-5. The rollout introduces Auto and Expert modes with generous initial usage limits, though Grok 4 Heavy stays paywalled. Musk also confirmed that ads will soon arrive in the chat interface to offset mounting GPU costs.

The frontier AI price war just escalated into a total free-for-all.

Elon Musk's xAI officially rolled out Grok 4 for free to all users globally. The model was previously locked behind SuperGrok and X Premium subscriptions, but xAI is now opening the gates to challenge OpenAI's newly launched GPT-5.

Here is what you get, along with the strings attached.

Smarter routing and a clash over limits

Grok 4 introduces two interaction styles. In Auto mode, the chatbot decides whether a prompt requires heavy reasoning or a quick response, saving compute while keeping latency low. If you want full control, Expert mode forces Grok 4 on every prompt.

While xAI announced generous usage limits for a limited time, Musk gave a slightly more sober update on August 11, stating that the free tier allows only a small number of daily queries before requiring a subscription.

Meanwhile, the top-tier variant, Grok 4 Heavy, remains exclusive to paying SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.

Deepfake backlash and incoming ads

Alongside the model, xAI launched Grok Imagine, a free AI video generator currently available only to US users, with higher request limits granted to paying international subscribers.

The tool is already facing heavy blowback. A BBC report revealed that Grok Imagine was being weaponized to generate explicit deepfakes of celebrities including Taylor Swift and Sydney Sweeney, sparking fresh outrage over xAI's guardrails.

Running all this hardware is also forcing a new business model. During a recent X Spaces session, Musk confirmed that ads are coming to Grok's website and mobile apps, placed between answers and prompt suggestions to offset skyrocketing GPU costs.

Why it matters

If you have been holding off on paid AI tiers, there has never been a better time to experiment. You can now tap top-tier reasoning without handing over a credit card, though heavy power users will hit free caps fast.

Competitively, xAI is refusing to let OpenAI run away with the freemium crown. By pairing Grok 4 with X's distribution, Musk is pulling massive consumer traffic while keeping the enterprise-grade Grok 4 Heavy behind a paywall.

We think turning Grok into an ad-supported chatbot is a pragmatic way to soften GPU burn, but inserting sponsored placements between AI answers risks degrading trust. Combine that with severe deepfake controversies around Grok Imagine, and xAI may soon find regulators knocking on its door.
