Grok leaves the nest: Telegram integration rolls out for dual-premium users

X just teamed up with Telegram to bring its Grok chatbot directly into the messaging app. If you subscribe to both Telegram Premium and X Premium, you can now chat with Grok in your message streams. It marks a notable move to expand Grok's reach beyond X's own walled garden.

If you wanted to chat with Elon Musk’s "anti-woke" AI, you used to have no choice but to stay inside X. Now, Grok is packing its bags and heading into your chat inbox.

Grok announced that it is now available directly on the messaging app Telegram. But getting access isn't as simple as clicking a button.

The double-paywall hurdle

To start chatting with Grok inside Telegram, you need to clear an unusually high barrier.

Users must be active subscribers to both Telegram Premium and X Premium. If you do not pay for both services every month, you cannot use the bot in your messaging stream.

This expansion comes as xAI rapidly scales up its hardware footprint. Last December, the startup raised a $6 billion Series C round at an $18 billion valuation.

Its massive Colossus data center in Memphis now houses roughly 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. With that much compute capacity online, X Corp needs to find ways to put Grok in front of more paying eyes.

Overlapping audiences and political noise

Telegram might seem like an unusual partner at first glance, but the audience overlap tells the real story.

Over the past few years, Telegram has become a go-to platform for right-wing commentators and alternative media personalities who left mainstream apps. That group aligns closely with the core user base Musk has cultivated on X.

The partnership did draw questions given past scrutiny over Musk and Telegram’s origins. However, Telegram quickly issued an update clarifying that it has never been legally or physically tied to Russia, operates from Dubai after its founders left years ago, and was explicitly created to protect users from surveillance.

Politics aside, X has kept quiet on Grok's actual engagement numbers. Putting the bot inside a popular messaging app is clearly an experiment in turning this massive infrastructure bet into real subscription revenue.

Why it matters

We think this integration reveals both xAI's ambition to expand and a puzzling business strategy.

For everyday users, requiring two separate subscriptions makes this a non-starter for almost anyone who isn't already deeply invested in both platforms. If you just want to test Grok, sticking to the standard X interface gives you the exact same model without paying Telegram an extra monthly fee.

Across the broader AI landscape, players like OpenAI and Anthropic are expanding by shipping native desktop apps and winning enterprise contracts. Grok, by contrast, is choosing to deepen its reach within niche social bubbles.

Running 200,000 H100s costs a small fortune every day, and xAI clearly needs cash flow. But locking a messaging bot behind a dual-paywall feels more like monetizing Musk super-fans than building an open, ubiquitous platform that can truly challenge market leaders.
