Telegram taps xAI's Grok in a $300M deal
Elon Musk and Pavel Durov just struck a one-year deal to integrate xAI's Grok assistant across all Telegram apps this summer. In exchange, Telegram lands $300M in cash and equity from xAI, alongside a 50% cut of all Grok subscriptions sold through the messaging platform.

Telegram is teaming up with Elon Musk to bring Grok to more than a billion messaging users.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced on X that the company has signed a one-year partnership with xAI. Starting this summer, xAI's Grok will be integrated across all Telegram apps, making the assistant directly accessible to Telegram's massive user base.
A $300M distribution play
The deal provides an immediate financial boost to Telegram.
xAI is paying Telegram $300 million in a mix of cash and equity. On top of that, Telegram will keep a 50% cut of all xAI subscriptions sold directly inside its apps.
For Telegram, it instantly brings frontier AI to its users while opening a lucrative new monetization channel.
Why it matters
Distribution remains the biggest bottleneck for standalone AI labs, and xAI just bought an express lane.
For everyday Telegram users, accessing a top-tier AI assistant will soon require zero extra friction—no new accounts, no separate browser tabs, and integrated directly into daily chat workflows.
Strategically, we think Musk made a smart, aggressive move. While competitors spend heavily on customer acquisition ads, xAI is spending $300 million to drop Grok directly in front of a billion active users. Giving up a 50% subscription cut is steep, but owning the conversation surface inside a dominant messaging platform makes the math work.
The real catch is the one-year timeline. If conversion is low, xAI spent heavily on temporary real estate; if it works, Telegram will have massive leverage when contract renewal comes around.
