Target is bringing full shopping carts to ChatGPT

Published Reach 36

OpenAI just announced a major retail partnership with Target, bringing a dedicated shopping app directly inside ChatGPT starting next week in beta. Shoppers can ask for party or gift ideas, assemble a multi-item cart, and check out for Drive Up or delivery without leaving the chat. Target also rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise across its headquarters for 18,000 employees. Why it matters: This moves conversational AI from research into full-funnel commercial transactions.

Planning a family movie night usually means opening a retail app and jumping through five different categories just to find popcorn, blankets, candles, and slippers.

Target wants to collapse that entire chore into a single prompt.

OpenAI announced a major retail partnership with Target, headlined by a dedicated Target app launching directly inside ChatGPT in beta next week.

A checkout counter inside your chat

Instead of just returning a wall of blue links, the new Target app lets ChatGPT users build an actual cart using natural language.

You can tag the Target app and say something like "Help me plan a family holiday movie night." It surfaces curated ideas across cozy blankets, candles, snacks, and slippers, and lets you assemble a multi-item basket.

It even handles fresh food. Once your cart is ready, you can check out directly using Target fulfillment options, including Drive Up, in-store Order Pickup, or standard shipping.

Target also plans to add Target Circle loyalty account linking and same-day delivery options down the road.

18,000 corporate workers and smart store tools

The consumer integration is only half the story. Behind the counter, Target has joined OpenAI's roster of more than one million enterprise customers.

ChatGPT Enterprise is now rolled out across Target headquarters, with 18,000 corporate employees using it to handle daily workflows.

In retail stores and service desks, teams use tools called Agent Assist and Store Companion. These allow employees to match prices, initiate returns, and resolve guest issues right inside a chat window.

For vendors, Target launched JOY, an AI assistant trained on a database of over 3,000 FAQs to answer supplier questions instantly. Frontier models are also running in the background to assist supply chain forecasting.

Why it matters

For everyday shoppers, this looks like one of the first genuinely practical commerce tools inside ChatGPT. Being able to buy fresh groceries and home goods in a single prompt without bouncing between apps could save real time.

For the retail industry, the battleground is officially moving upstream. Retailers spent decades optimizing their own search bars and apps, but consumer intent is increasingly beginning in AI chat interfaces. Target is ensuring it lives where those questions start.

We think Target's strategy here is sharp because it focuses on complete checkout and fulfillment rather than lazy affiliate links. Linking directly to Drive Up and curbside pickup leverages Target's greatest physical asset: its stores.

The real test will be inventory precision. Grocery shopping demands real-time local stock data, pricing accuracy, and intelligent out-of-stock substitutions. If ChatGPT hallucinates an item that is out of stock at your local drive-up lane, users will drop the tool instantly.
