ChatGPT can now do your grocery shopping
OpenAI and Instacart just brought full grocery ordering and checkout directly inside ChatGPT. Powered by the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, users can go from recipe brainstorming to a delivered cart without ever leaving the conversation. It's a clear sign that conversational AI is moving straight into real-world transaction execution.

Planning a meal usually involves a tedious dance: ask an AI for a recipe, copy the ingredients to your notes app, open a delivery service, search for each item, and finally pay.
OpenAI and Instacart are now cutting out the middle steps entirely.
The two companies announced a deeper partnership that brings grocery shopping and direct payments into ChatGPT. Users can now move from meal ideas to groceries at their doorstep without leaving the chat.
Powered by OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol, Instacart is the first app to offer in-chat purchases using OpenAI Instant Checkout.
Grocery shopping inside the prompt
The workflow is straightforward. If you ask ChatGPT to help shop for apple pie ingredients on Instacart, or simply ask for dinner ideas, the chatbot surfaces the Instacart app.
Once you link your Instacart account, OpenAI frontier models find the relevant items from local stores and build a cart inside the conversation.
Instead of bouncing you out to an external browser tab, you can review the cart and pay directly inside the chat interface. Instacart then routes the order to a personal shopper for store pickup and delivery.
The integration builds on an existing relationship. Instacart launched a ChatGPT-powered search tool more than two years ago and participated in the early research preview of OpenAI's Operator. Notably, former Instacart CEO Fidji Simo, already on OpenAI's board, joined the company in May as CEO of Applications.
OpenAI is pushing hard into agentic commerce, having previewed integrations with Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, and Target. The timing makes sense: Adobe predicts AI-assisted online shopping will surge 520% this holiday season.
There is also cash on the line. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI will take an undisclosed small fee when it helps complete a sale. Given OpenAI's massive compute costs and lack of profitability, transaction fees offer a new revenue stream.
Why it matters
For everyday consumers, this turns ChatGPT from an advice generator into an actual errand runner. Turning a meal plan into a delivered basket of groceries in two prompts eliminates real friction, making it well worth trying if you already rely on grocery delivery.
For the tech industry, this marks a critical shift toward closed-loop agentic commerce. Traditional conversational bots merely handed off web traffic to merchants. By handling identity, cart assembly, and native payment, ChatGPT is positioning itself as a universal operating interface for services.
We think this is a clever monetization play for OpenAI, testing whether high-intent consumer chat can yield commerce fees alongside subscriptions. However, handling physical goods leaves zero margin for error. If the model misinterprets a quantity, picks the wrong substitution for an out-of-stock item, or miscalculates a total, consumer trust in autonomous agents could evaporate quickly.
