OpenAI turns ChatGPT into a store with instant checkout
OpenAI just launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, built with Stripe to let people buy items directly in chat without leaving the app. It kicks off with U.S. Etsy sellers before rolling out to over a million Shopify merchants, alongside an open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol. AI is moving fast from product recommendations to actually closing sales.

The traditional way we shop online is starting to feel ancient: open Google, browse through a wall of sponsored ads, read reviews, jump to Amazon, and navigate multiple checkout forms.
OpenAI wants to collapse that entire funnel into a single conversation.
OpenAI just launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, alongside a new open-source standard dubbed the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed with Stripe.
The feature allows ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly users to complete purchases directly within the chat interface, moving the bot from an advisory tool to a transaction engine.
Direct buys in chat, but one item at a time
The feature is rolling out to logged-in Free, Plus, and Pro users in the United States, starting with U.S.-based Etsy sellers.
OpenAI confirmed that over one million Shopify merchants, including high-profile brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori, will follow soon.
There is an early catch: Instant Checkout currently only supports single-item purchases. Support for multi-item carts and wider geographic rollouts will arrive in later phases.
The user journey is straightforward. When someone asks for the best running shoes under $100 or unique ceramics gifts, ChatGPT serves organic, unsponsored recommendations.
If an item supports Instant Checkout, users simply tap Buy, confirm their shipping and payment info via saved cards, Stripe, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, and wrap up the deal without leaving the app.
OpenAI stated that it charges merchants a small fee per completed order, while users pay no markup. While search results are organic, ChatGPT admits that whether Instant Checkout is enabled is a factor when choosing between multiple sellers offering the same item.
Stripe inside and the battle for the checkout button
Rather than turning into an e-commerce retailer itself, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as an intermediary agent.
The merchant remains the merchant of record, handling order processing, fulfillment, and customer support on their existing infrastructure.
Stripe powers the technical plumbing. Will Gaybrick, Stripe’s president of technology and business, called the initiative an effort to re-architect commerce systems for billions of people.
For existing Stripe users, integrating agentic checkout can take as little as one line of code. Merchants using competing processors can still tap in via Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or ACP’s Delegated Payments Spec without replacing their core backends.
By open-sourcing the protocol, OpenAI is gunning for industry-wide adoption. But competition is already fierce.
Perplexity launched in-chat shopping last year, Microsoft has its Copilot Merchant Program, and Google recently rolled out its own open standard for autonomous purchasing, the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
Why it matters
We think this launch marks a critical inflection point where generative AI shifts from answering questions to executing real economic transactions.
For everyday consumers, turning a casual product search into an instant purchase removes friction, making impulse buys and niche gift shopping effortless. However, until multi-item carts arrive, it will not replace regular weekly shopping runs.
For the broader tech ecosystem, this strikes right at the heart of Google and Amazon’s core monopolies.
Google has dominated discovery, while Amazon dominated purchase fulfillment. If hundreds of millions of shoppers start making buying decisions directly inside conversational interfaces, traditional retail search ad revenue could see serious disruption.
OpenAI’s strategy here looks calculated and smart. By partnering with Stripe and letting merchants retain the customer relationship and fulfillment duties, it avoids the massive operational headaches of logistics.
Yet potential conflicts loom. OpenAI claims recommendations remain organic, but factoring Instant Checkout availability into merchant rankings introduces an inevitable incentive for sellers to adopt its standard. The fight for who controls the digital cash register is officially underway.
