OpenAI readies in-app checkout and order tracking for ChatGPT

Published Reach 32

OpenAI is quietly turning ChatGPT into a transactional utility. Latest app builds reveal a new "Orders" section in settings, pointing to native credit card checkout and tracking for plugins, services, and digital goods. The update also moves desktop Voice Mode into the main app window and lays groundwork for parental controls. Why it matters: ChatGPT is rapidly morphing from a conversational assistant into an all-in-one operating platform.

If you thought ChatGPT was just here to help with your emails and code, OpenAI has other plans: it wants to hold your wallet.

In recent desktop app builds, sleuths spotted a new "Orders" section quietly added to the ChatGPT settings menu, signaling that native checkout and order tracking are on the horizon.

Native checkout and a voice interface tidy-up

According to findings in the app code and earlier rumors, the upcoming checkout system will let users store their credit cards directly inside ChatGPT. You will be able to buy plugins, digital goods, and third-party services directly through the conversation, and then track your orders without ever leaving the app.

Preparations for localized support suggest this feature will likely hit the US first, giving heavy users a frictionless way to purchase digital add-ons on the platform.

OpenAI also gave the desktop app's Voice Mode a practical tweak. Instead of popping open an awkward separate window, voice sessions now launch neatly inside the main app view. On the flip side, the screen-sharing capability first demoed nearly two years ago seems to have been sidelined, with zero signs of recent work.

Meanwhile, the web interface is getting work done on parental controls, a long-overdue addition meant to ease safety worries in classrooms and family homes.

Why it matters

We think this is the clearest sign yet that OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be a full-blown operating system rather than a glorified text box.

For everyday users, shopping and subscribing directly inside a prompt sounds wonderfully frictionless. But handing your credit card to an AI conversational surface also raises the stakes: accidental purchases, rogue agent actions, and dispute handling are headaches that traditional app stores spent a decade sorting out.

For the tech industry, OpenAI controlling the cash register changes the game. Until now, plugins and integrations had to kick users out to third-party payment gateways, leaking conversion at every step. By owning native checkout, OpenAI is stepping directly onto territory held by browser extensions, mobile app stores, and e-commerce platforms.

Pushing commercial checkout and parental controls ahead of screen sharing makes OpenAI's priorities obvious: enterprise safety and transactional revenue come first, flashy vision demos come second.
