Google rolls out Duet AI to Workspace users
Google just made Duet AI generally available across Google Workspace. The AI assistant can build presentations from Drive and Gmail data, take real-time notes in Meet, and even attend meetings on your behalf. It marks Google's biggest push yet to turn Workspace into an active collaborator rather than a passive toolkit.

Picture this: it’s 5 PM, and your boss emails asking for a complete Q3 deck by tomorrow morning. Usually, that means kissing your evening goodbye while digging through endless Sheets, P&L docs, and sales emails.
Google wants to get you home before dinner. On August 29, the company announced that Duet AI for Google Workspace is now generally available, complete with a no-cost trial for organizations looking to jump in.
Workspace is already sitting on over 3 billion users and more than 10 million paying customers. After running Duet AI through thousands of companies and over a million trusted testers, Google is ready to roll out its AI collaborator to the masses.
Decks out of thin air, and an avatar for your meetings
The biggest selling point of Duet AI is how it glues the entire Workspace suite together. In that late-afternoon panic scenario, you can type a prompt like "create a summary of Q3 performance," and Duet AI pulls relevant charts, text, and images straight from your Drive and Gmail into a brand-new Slides presentation.
Then there is the meeting grind. Inside Google Meet, Duet AI adds studio look, studio lighting, and audio fixes, alongside dynamic tiles that detect faces in physical conference rooms so remote workers can see individual names. It also brings real-time translated captions across 18 languages.
Even better, Duet AI is tackling the dreaded meeting overload. A forthcoming "take notes for me" feature will capture notes, action items, and snippets on the fly. Latecomers can get a quick snapshot called "summary so far," and if you are double-booked, "attend for me" will let the AI join on your behalf to deliver your message and snag the recap.
Massive chat rooms and instant email drafting
Google Chat is also getting a makeover, sporting enhanced search, a refreshed interface, and a direct line to chat with Duet AI about shared files. For impromptu syncs, teams can hop into audio-first "huddles" powered by Meet without scheduling a formal invite. Community sizes in Chat can now scale up to 500,000 members.
Over in Gmail, smart replies get a serious upgrade. Instead of tiny canned responses, Duet AI lets mobile users generate longer, personalized draft replies with a single tap.
To calm enterprise nerves, Google pledged that your interactions stay private, zero-trust controls are built in, and Workspace customer data is never used to train foundational models without explicit permission. Third-party creative partners like Jasper and Typeface are also being integrated directly into the workflow.
Why it matters
For anyone drowning in daily desk work, Duet AI targets the most exhausting part of modern jobs: context switching across half a dozen tabs. Having an AI that actually connects the dots between spreadsheets, email threads, and presentations saves hours of mundane busywork. If your company already runs on Workspace, taking advantage of the free trial is an easy call.
Industry-wide, this is Google’s direct counterpunch to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Workplace productivity is the sharpest proving ground for generative AI cash flow, and Google is flexing its 3-billion-user footprint to lock corporate teams into its cloud ecosystem before Microsoft runs away with the market.
We think Google was smart to focus on unglamorous friction points like meeting fatigue and deck building rather than vague creative writing prompts. That said, letting an AI summarize confidential quarterly numbers always carries a hallucination risk, and when everyone starts sending an AI proxy to attend their meetings, you have to wonder if half of those meetings needed to happen in the first place.
