Google Meet now uses Gemini to take notes during video calls

Published Reach 35

Google just rolled out a "take notes for me" feature in Google Meet, using Gemini AI to capture key discussion points rather than generating a raw transcript. Summaries automatically save to a Google Doc that syncs with participants or calendar invites. For now, it is limited to English on computers for select Workspace add-on subscribers.

Nobody likes being the designated note-taker in an hour-long video call. Google is finally addressing that pain by rolling out a new tool for Meet called "take notes for me."

Powered by Gemini AI, the feature skips word-for-word transcriptions and instead captures key discussion points in real time.

Auto-generated Docs in your Drive

Once the call ends, Gemini compiles everything into a Google Doc and drops it right into the meeting owner's Google Drive.

From there, the summary can automatically be emailed to attendees or attached to the Google Calendar invite. If you also enabled recording or full transcription, links to those files will be included in the document as well.

For now, availability is fairly narrow. You need a Google Workspace account with the Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-on. It is also currently restricted to English and only works on computers and laptops.

Why it matters

Meeting summaries are basically table stakes now, with Microsoft Teams and Zoom already racing ahead with their own assistants. For teams living inside Google Workspace, this makes total sense and saves them from paying for third-party note-taking bots.

That said, the real test is reliability. A hallucinated deadline or a misunderstood action item can easily derail a project. Given Google's recent high-profile AI hiccups, users will likely still feel the need to babysit the notes before blindly sending them out.
