Snapchat lets brands build immersive ad lenses with generative AI
Snapchat just rolled out Sponsored AI Lenses, a new advertising format powered by Snap's proprietary generative AI. Instead of building complex 3D assets or VFX, brands can now transport users' selfies into up to 10 preset generative scenes. Early tests with Uber and Tinder show users spend significantly more time playing with these AI-driven ads than standard sponsored lenses.

Adding cartoon dog ears to your selfies is officially yesterday’s news. Today, brands want to take your actual face and drop it directly into an AI-generated fantasy world.
Snapchat just introduced Sponsored AI Lenses, a new ad format that lets advertisers build immersive, face-morphing experiences using Snap’s proprietary generative AI models.
Goodbye VFX teams, hello AI templates
In the past, building a branded Snapchat lens was expensive and painfully slow. Brands had to hire 3D artists and visual effects teams to model assets from scratch, often dragging production out for weeks.
Snap says its new AI lenses completely eliminate that need. Instead of building custom 3D assets, brands can now rely on generative AI templates, slashing production timelines dramatically.
Here is how it works for users: you snap a quick selfie, and Snap’s AI analyzes your facial features. It then blends you into an AI-rendered scene using preset prompts and poses.
Even better for advertisers, a single sponsored lens can offer up to 10 different visual transformations, giving users a reason to keep tapping and trying new looks.
Early adopters are already seeing traction. Tinder ran a campaign allowing users to generate a personalized photo labeled My 2025 Dating Vibe, while Uber launched a Thanksgiving-themed transformation. Snap noted that both brands saw higher-than-average user playtime compared to standard AR lenses.
This rollout builds on Snap’s aggressive AI push this year, following last month’s debut of video generative lenses and a February preview of an on-device text-to-image research model.
Why it matters
While most tech giants are still trying to figure out how to monetize conversational chatbots, Snap is doing something much smarter: plugging generative AI straight into its highest-margin ad business.
For marketing teams, this dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for interactive AR campaigns. You no longer need a massive visual effects budget or a months-long lead time to launch an immersive campaign on mobile.
For users, it feels like an entertaining creative playground rather than a disruptive interruption. You aren't just passively viewing an ad; you are actively turning your face into the content and sharing it with friends.
We think the real test will be avoiding novelty fatigue. If every brand serves up the same slightly uncanny face swaps, users will tune out fast. But as a template for turning expensive AI research into immediate, scalable ad revenue, Snap is setting an example other social platforms will inevitably copy.
