Snap puts brand AI agents straight into your inbox
Snap just launched AI Sponsored Snaps, a new ad format that places brand AI agents directly inside Snapchat's Chat inbox. Users can ask questions and get recommendations in real time without leaving the app, with credit bureau Experian signing on as the first alpha partner. With nearly a billion monthly users, Snap is betting the future of ads looks less like banners and more like texting a bot.
Most social media ads still feel like billboard interruptions, but Snap is testing a radically different approach: putting the advertiser right into your direct messages as someone you can text.
Snap introduced AI Sponsored Snaps, a new ad format that lets brands deploy custom AI agents directly inside the Snapchat Chat inbox. Instead of tapping a link and bouncing to an external website, users can chat back and forth with a brand's AI to ask questions, explore products, or get personalized recommendations without leaving their conversation thread.
Credit bureau Experian has already signed on as the first alpha partner, aiming to use conversational AI to help Snapchatters navigate credit scores and personal finances.
Turning the inbox into ad real estate
Snap is betting big that text conversation is becoming the most valuable surface in modern advertising. And they certainly have the volume to back it up.
During Q1 2026 alone, Snapchat users sent more than 950 billion chats. On top of that, over half a billion people have talked to Snap's native bot, My AI, since its debut. Users on the platform are already conditioned to treat AI as just another contact in their feed.
Snap is also building on solid groundwork. Its existing Sponsored Snaps format already delivers 22% more conversions at an action cost roughly 20% lower than traditional inventories, driving twice as many conversions per full-screen view. Bringing interactive AI into that mix turns a passive promo into a full-funnel sales agent that can handle discovery, qualification, and checkout in a single continuous thread.
Why it matters
For nearly two decades, digital advertising has revolved around impressions and clicks. Snap is pushing toward a model where conversion happens through sustained, human-like dialogue.
For brands targeting younger demographics, this format provides direct access to Snap's nearly one billion monthly active users. High-friction decisions—like opening a financial account or selecting insurance—usually suffer terrible drop-off rates on standard landing pages. A well-prompted conversational agent right inside a chat app can answer edge-case questions instantly and hold user attention far longer.
That said, walking into a user's private inbox is inherently risky. Chat trays are personal spaces reserved for close friends. If these brand agents feel spammy, intrusive, or overly aggressive, users will quickly sour on the experience.
We think this is a smart, calculated gamble by Snap. Rather than inventing another intrusive banner, they are leveraging an established user habit. If the alpha with Experian proves that users actually want to text brand bots instead of browsing web shops, rivals like Meta will inevitably have to accelerate their own inbox agent playbooks.
