Meta teases ChatGPT-style bots and photo tools for WhatsApp and Instagram

Meta just gave employees an internal look at a suite of upcoming generative AI features, including customizable chatbots for WhatsApp and Messenger, prompt-based photo editing on Instagram, and an internal assistant dubbed Metamate. Mark Zuckerberg said the tech will eventually touch every single product.

Meta is finally bringing its AI weapons to the apps where people actually talk to each other.

At an all-hands meeting on Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg and company executives gave employees a sneak peek at a suite of upcoming generative AI features. Zuckerberg told staff that recent breakthroughs have made it possible to build generative AI "into every single one of our products."

It marks the first concrete look at how Meta plans to deploy this technology across its massive base of 3.8 billion monthly active users.

Chatbots with personality and prompt-based photo edits

The consumer lineup leans heavily into messaging and visual creativity.

Meta is building ChatGPT-like chatbots for WhatsApp and Messenger that can converse using different distinct personas, rather than a single generic assistant voice.

Over on Instagram, an upcoming feature will let users modify their photos directly through text prompts. The company also demonstrated an AI tool capable of generating custom emoji stickers on the fly for messaging chats.

Inside the office, Meta is deploying its own dogfood: an internal employee assistant dubbed Metamate, designed to answer internal questions and execute workflow tasks by tapping into company systems.

Paying off the infrastructure debt

While rivals like Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat rushed out consumer bots months ago, Meta has been noticeably quiet on consumer-facing rollouts.

Until now, its only visible public test was announced last month with a small cohort of advertisers, testing tools for generating ad backgrounds and copy variations.

Behind the scenes, Meta spent the past year playing catch-up. Early last year, leadership realized the company lacked the hardware and software muscle required to power widespread AI features. That led to massive internal reorganizations and heavy spending to rebuild its compute infrastructure from the ground up.

Why it matters

Meta is taking the practical route: rather than forcing users into an empty chat box on a new website, it is embedding bite-sized AI utilities directly into the daily habits of billions of people.

For everyday creators and chat users, generating custom stickers and editing photos via plain text lowers the barrier to entry to essentially zero. If these tools land smoothly, Meta will instantly become the largest consumer gateway to generative AI on the planet simply by virtue of its 3.8 billion monthly user base.

We think the move is clever because it focuses on fun, engagement, and utility rather than pure enterprise productivity. But deploying conversational bots with unique personas across WhatsApp and Messenger carries real safety and moderation risks at this scale. The compute bill alone will be staggering, but Meta seems ready to prove its newly overhauled infrastructure can handle the load.
