Instagram lets you prompt your Story backgrounds

Instagram just gave your casual selfie a Hollywood-level set department. Meta rolled out a generative AI background editing tool for U.S. users, turning Story photos into full-blown custom scenes with simple text prompts.

Turn your bedroom into a dino chase

Meta generative AI lead Ahmad Al-Dahle shared on Threads that users can tap a new background tool icon inside Stories. You can pick ready-made prompts like "On a red carpet," "Being chased by dinosaurs," or "Surrounded by puppies," or type whatever scene you want.

Once you share the Story, viewers see an interactive "Try it" sticker showing your prompt, letting friends recreate or remix the image right inside their own app with a single tap.

Why it matters

Meta is turning generative AI into an organic viral loop. While Snapchat has kept its prompt-based background generators behind its paid Snapchat+ subscription, Instagram is handing this to everyday users for free with built-in peer distribution.

We think this lightweight implementation is smart because it removes prompt fatigue entirely. Instead of opening a standalone generator, users just dress up daily moments on the fly. The real test, however, will be whether the segmentation and edge-blending look clean enough to keep people from treating it as just another gimmick.
