Meta AI lands in India across WhatsApp and Instagram
Meta just rolled out Meta AI in India in English across WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Built on Llama 3, the free assistant lets users brainstorm in group chats, pull up details directly from Facebook feeds, and generate or animate images by typing "imagine".
Meta just dropped its flagship AI assistant into India, and it is landing straight inside the apps people already open dozens of times a day.
Powered by Meta Llama 3, the assistant is now rolling out in English across WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and on the web. It is completely free, marking the latest stop in an expansion that started in April across more than a dozen countries following its initial reveal at Connect last year.
Built directly into daily chats and feeds
Instead of forcing users to download yet another standalone app, Meta is baking the assistant directly into group chats and scrolling feeds.
Inside a WhatsApp group chat, you can ask Meta AI to recommend restaurants with scenic views and vegan dishes while planning a night out. If you are prepping for a road trip, it can map out stops along the route, and students cramming for an exam can ask it on the web to whip up multiple-choice practice tests.
It is also integrated into the Facebook Feed. If you are scrolling and spot a photo of Iceland's northern lights, you can ask Meta AI right below the post about the best time of year to catch the aurora borealis.
Generating images and animating them on the fly
Creativity tools are a major piece of the rollout. Using the word imagine in a prompt lets users generate images directly inside personal or group chats, whether that is designing a birthday invite or sharing visual jokes.
Meta also included rapid iteration features. Friends in a group can keep tweaking prompts together to refine an image, or ask the AI to animate a static generation into motion.
For home projects, users moving into a new apartment can ask Meta AI to imagine aesthetic styles and pull together visual mood boards before heading out furniture shopping.
Why it matters
For regular users, the convenience factor here is massive. You do not need to manage a separate subscription or learn a complex interface; top-tier AI capabilities now live right where you text your friends and family. The obvious catch is language support, as launching in English only leaves out a significant portion of India's vernacular internet users for now.
For the broader industry, this is distribution at its most lethal. India represents one of the largest communication bases in the world, particularly for WhatsApp. By embedding Llama 3 natively for free, Meta instantly cuts off oxygen for standalone AI wrappers and poses a serious challenge to dedicated chat apps like ChatGPT in emerging markets.
We think this invisible integration strategy is exactly where consumer AI wins. Rather than treating AI as a destination, Meta treats it as an ambient utility inside existing habits, which looks like the fastest way to get real-world adoption at scale.
