Anthropic just merged Claude Cowork and chat into one

Anthropic just merged Claude Cowork and chat into a single surface, so you no longer have to decide where a task belongs. Alongside the merger, it launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta, allowing Claude to draft documents, build slides, and export them as PowerPoint or PDF directly inside any conversation. The update is rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers first over the next few weeks.

The most annoying part of using modern AI tools is figuring out where to start. You open one tab for a quick question, jump to a workspace for heavy lifting, and launch a third tool when you need visual work.

Anthropic is finally putting an end to that tab juggling. The company is merging Claude Cowork and its standard chat interface into one unified experience. The rollout begins today for Pro and Max users across web, desktop, and mobile, with Team and Free tiers following soon.

Docs and slides straight from your chat

You no longer have to decide where a project belongs before you begin. You can ask a quick factual question or hand over a messy quarterly pipeline report, and Claude will figure out behind the scenes which tools to spin up, even after you close your laptop.

Alongside the merger, Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta. Claude Design, the prototyping feature originally introduced back in April, also now works inside standard conversations.

Instead of copy-pasting outlines into third-party software, you can ask Claude to write a report and summarize it into five slides in the same prompt. You can present directly from Claude, adjust layout elements, or export the deck as a PowerPoint or PDF. Everything you generate lives under a single shareable link that works on mobile, so you can kick off a task on your Mac and review slide comments while riding the train.

Anthropic also added recurring task scheduling. If you need a pipeline breakdown every Monday morning, you can schedule it once, and Claude will handle the data gathering and drafting automatically.

Why it matters

For knowledge workers, this eliminates the friction of copying and pasting between five different apps. Having your research, written brief, and executive deck emerge from the exact same conversational context means the slides actually match the data. If you spend your weeks compiling recurring decks or client summaries, this feature alone makes a paid tier worth testing.

For the AI industry, Anthropic is addressing a widespread user experience failure. TechCrunch pointed out that ChatGPT suffers from similar interface fragmentation across its various tools and platforms. As frontier model performance starts to plateau, interface cohesion and frictionless task handoff are becoming the real battlegrounds.

We think folding Cowork and Design back into a single input box is a genuinely smart move. Specialized sub-products often feel great to product teams but end up creating decision fatigue for actual users. The obvious risk here lies in task routing: if Claude misinterprets a casual question as a complex project and spins up an unwanted document workspace, users will quickly get annoyed. Anthropic has to prove its routing logic can stay out of the way when you just want a straight answer.
