Anthropic adds private plugin stores and cross-app workflows to Claude Cowork
Anthropic just upgraded its Claude Cowork platform with private plugin marketplaces, letting organizations build and distribute custom agent tools across teams. The release introduces a unified admin menu, new connectors like Google Workspace, and pre-built templates covering HR through investment banking. Claude can also now pass context end-to-end between Excel and PowerPoint in an early preview.
Anthropic just gave its enterprise AI platform a major promotion—and it is taking direct aim at the most tedious parts of corporate life.
On Tuesday, Anthropic rolled out a major update to Claude Cowork. The headliner is that Claude can now coordinate multi-step tasks across both Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, passing data and context back and forth between the two desktop apps. At the same time, the company is letting enterprise administrators build private, company-wide plugin marketplaces tailored to their internal tech stacks.
Everything is available starting Tuesday in a research preview for paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users across Mac and Windows.
Excel and PowerPoint finally talk to each other
Anyone who has spent late nights in investment banking or corporate finance knows the pain of model-to-deck pipeline work: you build a forecast in Excel, manually format slides in PowerPoint, and then a partner asks for a revision, breaking every single chart.
Anthropic’s cross-app update aims to kill that back-and-forth. Running as desktop add-ins for Excel and PowerPoint, Claude can analyze earnings, update a financial model, and then generate the corresponding presentation deck in one continuous workflow. When your underlying assumptions change, Claude automatically cascades the edits down to the slides.
Powering this automation is a fresh wave of deep enterprise integrations. Anthropic introduced native connectors for Google Workspace (Calendar, Drive, Gmail), Docusign, Apollo, and WordPress. In financial services, Anthropic teamed up with the heavy hitters: new MCP connectors hook directly into FactSet and MSCI, while S&P Global integrated Capital IQ Pro and LSEG brought live yield curves and cross-asset pricing straight into Claude’s workspace.
Beyond finance, Anthropic shipped domain-specific plugin templates across human resources, design, engineering, and operations—covering chores like drafting offer letters, staging incident postmortems, and generating UX critique frameworks.
Admin controls get serious
For enterprise IT departments, shiny AI features are a liability without granular governance. Anthropic spent substantial real estate in this release appeasing system admins.
A new unified "Customize" dashboard now acts as single mission control for plugins, skills, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors. Admins can build plugins from scratch guided by Claude’s interview prompts, provision access down to individual seats, enforce auto-installs, and pull plugins directly from private GitHub repositories (currently in private beta).
To make it palatable to corporate leadership, Cowork now supports full enterprise branding and integrates with OpenTelemetry so DevOps and security teams can monitor token usage, API costs, and tool-calling telemetry in real time.
As The Verge pointed out, plugging AI into boring enterprise plumbing might lack the hype of bleeding-edge research demos, but this unglamorous corporate grind is precisely where software budgets actually live.
Why it matters
For knowledge workers buried under spreadsheets and pitch decks, this is arguably the most practical Claude feature yet. If you are on a paid plan, it is well worth testing on low-stakes reporting immediately, though you shouldn't let it touch mission-critical numbers without a human audit. Hallucinating a cell reference in a financial model still carries career-ending risks.
For the broader AI landscape, Anthropic is boldly marching into Microsoft’s backyard. Microsoft has long counted on its Office desktop monopoly as an impenetrable moat against standalone frontier model labs. By turning Claude into an intelligent tissue connecting Excel and PowerPoint via lightweight add-ins, Anthropic shows that an agile AI player can hijack Office workflows without needing to own the operating system. It dials up immediate competitive pressure on Microsoft 365 Copilot.
We think Anthropic made a brilliant tactical choice here: instead of building another standalone workspace to replace Excel, it chose to meet enterprise workers exactly where they already suffer. Making plugins portable and pinning everything to the open MCP standard keeps customers from feeling boxed in. The lingering question is pipeline fragility—multi-app automation chains tend to break when third-party APIs hitch. But if Anthropic can make cross-app context stick reliably, the office desktop will never feel the same.
