Claude just moved directly inside Microsoft Word
Anthropic just launched Claude for Word, letting users draft and edit documents without leaving Microsoft Word. Every AI edit shows up as a native tracked change to preserve your formatting, and conversation threads can seamlessly span Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It is currently in beta for Claude Team and Enterprise subscribers.

The single most annoying thing about using AI to edit documents is copying the text back, only to watch your carefully crafted numbered lists and cross-references fall apart.
Anthropic wants to end that friction. The company just launched Claude for Word in public beta, bringing its AI directly into a persistent sidebar inside Microsoft Word on both Mac and Windows via Microsoft AppSource.
Instead of dumping text into a chat box, every single edit Claude makes appears as a native Word tracked change. You can see redlines in the revision pane and accept or reject edits exactly like you would with a human colleague.
Deep contract reading and cross-suite memory
Claude for Word is specifically built to respect complex document structures. It handles multi-level legal numbering, defined terms, and heading hierarchies without mangling surrounding formats.
It can also read through comment threads and treat reviewer notes as action items. Anthropic is putting legal contract review front and center: the tool can summarize deal terms, flag provisions that deviate from market standards by severity, and rewrite one-sided indemnification clauses into mutual agreements.
Teams can also save repeatable review workflows as reusable Skills, ensuring consistent quality across an organization.
On top of that, Claude now shares conversational context across Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can finish analyzing an audit report in Word, jump into PowerPoint, and simply ask Claude to draft slides based on that document without pasting a single word.
Access is currently rolling out in public beta to Claude Team subscribers, priced at $25 per seat per month, and Enterprise accounts.
Shaking up the legal tech market
Targeting Word users is a direct strike at the $1 trillion global legal services industry, where Word redlines remain the undisputed standard operating procedure.
This isn't Anthropic's first aggressive move into the sector. On February 2, the company released a legal plugin for Claude Cowork. The next day, market panic wiped an estimated $285 billion in value from legal tech and data providers, sending Thomson Reuters down 16% and RELX down 14%.
Nick West, chief strategy officer at law firm Mishcon de Reya, told the Financial Times that Anthropic's expansion could "meaningfully compress pricing and reduce demand for legal AI tools."
Why it matters
For lawyers, corporate counsel, and financial analysts, this is the first AI implementation that respects the way they actually work. By sticking to native tracked changes, it removes the review friction and formatting headaches that made standalone chat tools impractical for high-stakes documents.
For the broader tech landscape, Anthropic is pulling the rug out from under single-feature legal tech startups. Why pay for a niche contract review SaaS when the frontier foundation model does it directly inside Word at $25 a seat?
Anthropic made a brilliant tactical choice here. Instead of trying to build a rival document editor, it embedded itself straight into Microsoft's corporate fortress. Ironically, while Microsoft has been pushing Copilot across 365, Anthropic may have just delivered the exact Word integration enterprise users have been begging for.
