Apple brings full Apple Intelligence to the $599 iPhone 17e
Apple just introduced the iPhone 17e, packing its 3nm A19 chip and full Apple Intelligence support into a $599 entry phone. It doubles base storage to 256GB, adds an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine alongside the custom C1X modem, and brings back MagSafe. It basically lowers the price floor for running Apple's generative AI models on-device.

If you've spent the last few years nursing an aging iPhone with full storage alerts, Apple might finally have built your next upgrade.
Apple just announced the iPhone 17e, the newest budget-friendly entry in the iPhone 17 lineup. Starting at $599, the phone now comes with 256GB of baseline storage, effectively doubling the previous generation's entry capacity at the exact same price. A 512GB option is also available, with pre-orders kicking off March 4 and deliveries starting March 11.
Beyond extra storage, Apple handed the 17e some surprisingly premium internals.
Serious silicon and proper charging
The device is powered by the latest 3-nanometer A19 chip, sporting a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine tuned for on-device Apple Intelligence models.
Apple also rectified one of the biggest complaints from the previous generation by restoring proper MagSafe and Qi2 support. Wireless charging now hits 15W instead of the sluggish 7.5W limit on the 16e, while USB-C fast charging gets the battery to 50 percent in roughly 30 minutes.
Up front sits a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness. It is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers 3x better scratch resistance alongside reduced glare. The phone also gains the customizable Action button alongside Face ID and an IP68 durability rating.
For optics, you get a single 48MP Fusion rear sensor that uses sensor cropping for an optical-quality 2x telephoto crop, outputting 24MP default shots, next-gen portrait depth mapping for pets and people, and 4K Dolby Vision video at 60 fps with Spatial Audio.
The C1X modem milestone
Tucked under the hood is Apple's in-house C1X cellular modem. Apple says the chip delivers twice the speed of the C1 inside the iPhone 16e, matching the performance of the iPhone Air.
Crucially, Apple claims the C1X draws 30 percent less power than the modem found in the iPhone 16 Pro, which plays a major part in driving the device's all-day battery endurance.
The phone ships with iOS 26, featuring the updated Liquid Glass interface design and system-level Apple Intelligence perks like screen-aware visual intelligence, Call Screening, and Hold Assist. It also retains Apple's full suite of satellite communication tools, from Emergency SOS to Messages and Find My.
Why it matters
For consumers still holding onto an iPhone 11, 12, or 13, the 17e looks like a no-brainer upgrade. At $599, doubling the base capacity to 256GB removes the chronic storage squeeze that usually pushed budget buyers into pricier tiers, while MagSafe and the A19 ensure it won't feel obsolete anytime soon.
Strategically, this is Apple playing hardball in the upper mid-range. By offering modern silicon and 256GB at $599, Apple exerts heavy pressure on Android competitors who typically compete on raw specs in this bracket. More importantly, scaling the proprietary C1X modem down to consumer-tier hardware confirms Apple's supply chain independence from Qualcomm is moving at full throttle.
We think the formula works because Apple finally stopped penny-pinching on table-stakes features. While high-refresh displays remain reserved for higher price points, giving everyday users plenty of storage, fast wireless charging, and top-tier silicon makes the 17e arguably the most well-rounded entry iPhone Apple has released in years.
