Apple just introduced the iPhone 16e, expanding the flagship iPhone 16 family into a more affordable bracket.

The new phone arrives in matte black and white finishes, with pre-orders kicking off Friday, February 21, and store availability landing on February 28.

Instead of recycling ancient chassis or cutting corners on the processor, Apple equipped the 16e with its latest A18 silicon. More importantly, it debuts the C1, Apple's very first in-house cellular modem.

New silicon inside and out

The front of the iPhone 16e sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen shielded by the latest Ceramic Shield formulation, alongside IP68 water resistance and Face ID authentication.

The real hardware surprise sits inside the radio architecture. The phone is the debut vehicle for the Apple C1, the company's first proprietary 5G cellular modem, which Apple calls its most power-efficient modem ever. Paired with internal redesigns and A18's low power draw, the device claims the best battery life ever on a 6.1-inch iPhone.

According to Apple, battery life stretches up to six hours longer than the iPhone 11, and up to 12 hours longer than any prior iPhone SE generation.

Processing duties are handled by the A18 chip, featuring a 6-core CPU that runs up to 80 percent faster than the A13 Bionic, a 4-core GPU capable of hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine that executes machine learning tasks up to six times faster than the A13.

On the back, Apple opted for a single 48MP Fusion camera. Thanks to computational photography, the sensor provides an integrated 2x telephoto crop with optical quality zoom, alongside 4K Dolby Vision capture at 60 fps. The customizable Action button also makes the jump, opening up fast app shortcuts and Visual Intelligence features.

Budget access to Apple Intelligence

Bringing AI down the price curve is clearly the primary mission here. The iPhone 16e natively runs Apple Intelligence right out of the gate.

Users gain access to the Clean Up photo tool, natural language media search, Image Playground, Genmoji, and system-wide Writing Tools. Siri picks up conversational context and type-to-Siri support, plus optional ChatGPT integration that operates without requiring an account or storing request logs.

Apple's satellite connectivity suite is also fully intact. Even outside cellular coverage, users can leverage Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite, alongside hardware-level Crash Detection.

Why it matters

We think the iPhone 16e marks a decisive shift in how Apple treats its lower-tier lineup.

In the past, cheaper iPhones meant sacrificing modern battery life, living with dated displays, and settling for old silicon. By putting the flagship A18, an OLED panel, and modern satellite safety into the 16e, Apple makes the device a genuinely compelling upgrade path for people still clinging to an iPhone 11 or previous SE models.

The biggest industry story, however, is the C1 modem. Apple spent years and billions trying to build its own cellular chip to reduce reliance on Qualcomm. Debuting the modem in an entry-level volume driver rather than a Pro model is a smart tactical play: it puts the hardware through real-world scale without risking the ultra-premium reputation if unexpected connectivity hiccups emerge.

For the broader market, this phone effectively lowers the price floor for running on-device generative AI. Apple needs tens of millions of devices running Apple Intelligence to justify its developer ecosystem, and giving budget buyers the full suite puts immediate pressure on midrange Android competitors.
