Apple unveils iPhone 17 with on-device generative AI muscles

Published Reach 57

Apple just announced the iPhone 17, packing an A19 chip designed with built-in neural accelerators in every GPU core to run on-device generative AI models. The phone pairs with iOS 26 to power upgraded Apple Intelligence capabilities like Live Translation and screen-wide visual search, starting at $799.

Last year, Apple spent almost its entire iPhone presentation preaching the gospel of Apple Intelligence, only to face months of delay backlash. Fast forward to today, and Tim Cook just wrapped an unusually brisk 75-minute showcase where the word "AI" was conspicuously dialed down.

Instead of overpromising on agentic assistants, Apple decided to give standard iPhone buyers what they have actually been begging for: real hardware upgrades.

The base iPhone finally gets Pro-level specs

The marquee change on the base iPhone 17 is the display. The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR screen finally gains ProMotion, bringing adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and Always-On display down to 1Hz. Peak outdoor brightness now reaches 3,000 nits, protected by a new Ceramic Shield 2 with 3x better scratch resistance.

Apple is also killing off the dreaded 128GB baseline. iPhone 17 starts at 256GB for the entry configuration, with a 512GB tier, offered in black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white. Pre-orders open September 12, shipping September 19.

The camera system gets its biggest overhaul in years. Up front sits an all-new Center Stage 18MP camera built around a square sensor. Because the sensor is square, users can capture landscape selfies while holding the phone vertically. The camera uses on-device machine learning to automatically widen the frame when friends jump in, and supports Dual Capture to record both front and back lenses at once.

Around the back, every lens is now 48MP. Alongside the 48MP Fusion main shooter with 2x crop, there is an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide sensor. Driving everything is the 3-nanometer A19 chip, which packs neural accelerators directly into every GPU core, paired with Apple's custom N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Battery life also jumps up to 30 hours of video playback — eight more hours than the iPhone 16. Fast charging hits 50 percent in 20 minutes when paired with Apple's new 40W dynamic adapter.

Apple dials back the AI hype

As The Verge noted, consumer-facing AI was surprisingly muted. The few features Apple mentioned — like live audio translation and visual search — were mostly rehashes of its WWDC reveals, matching tools Google and Samsung shipped long ago.

The toned-down tone follows internal turbulence in Cupertino. The Verge reported that Apple’s AI division recently suffered at least 10 high-profile departures, including robotics lead Jian Zhang joining Meta, alongside foundational model researchers heading to OpenAI and Anthropic.

Rather than pretending its conversational agents are ahead of the pack, Apple reframed machine learning as invisible plumbing: frame-rate upscaling in games, adaptive power management in iOS 26, and background health metrics across the Apple Watch.

Why it matters

We think this is the most self-aware move Apple has made in years. Last cycle proved that marketing half-baked AI features only frustrates early adopters when delivery dates slip. By retreating from chatbot theater and pouring engineering resources into the standard iPhone, Apple made the regular model genuinely competitive again.

For anyone sitting on an iPhone 13 or 14, this is an easy buying decision. You no longer have to pay the Pro tax just to get a fluid 120Hz screen, decent baseline storage, or top-tier selfie framing.

For the broader industry, it signals a welcome shift. Google and Samsung have spent recent quarters treating generative software as the sole justification for new hardware. Apple’s course correction shows that behind-the-scenes silicon efficiency and tangible day-to-day specs still move more units than an AI assistant trying to write your text messages.
