Apple drops iOS 18.2 with Genmoji, Image Playground, and ChatGPT inside

Published Reach 51

Apple just released iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, bringing the next wave of Apple Intelligence. Users can now create Genmoji, generate artwork in Image Playground, and tap into ChatGPT directly through Siri and Writing Tools. It is live now for localized English, with other languages rolling out starting this April.

Apple just dropped iOS 18.2, and it finally brings the headlining Apple Intelligence features that were promised back in June.

The update, which also covers iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2, introduces custom emoji generator Genmoji, image creation tool Image Playground, Camera Control visual intelligence for iPhone 16 users, and native ChatGPT integration across Siri and Writing Tools.

Turn sketches into art and make your own emoji

The visual side of Apple Intelligence is officially here. Genmoji lets users create custom emoji directly from the keyboard by typing a prompt, or even using a photo of a friend with accessories like hats or sunglasses. They can be inserted inline in text, tapped back as reactions, or shared as stickers.

Image Playground arrives as a standalone app and inside Messages, Freeform, and Keynote, letting users generate images in Animation and Illustration styles. In the Notes app, a new tool called Image Wand allows users to simply circle a rough sketch or blank space, analyzing the surrounding text to automatically generate a polished graphic.

Writing Tools also received an upgrade. Beyond basic proofreading and summaries, a new Describe Your Change field lets users type custom instructions, such as turning a dinner invite into a poem or injecting stronger action verbs into a resume.

Siri taps OpenAI, and the camera gets smarter

For iPhone 16 owners, the Camera Control button now activates visual intelligence. Users can point at objects, storefronts, or documents to pull summaries, translate text, look up items on Google, or forward complex diagrams straight to ChatGPT for explanations.

ChatGPT is now woven directly into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools. When Siri hits a query better suited for a frontier model, it asks for permission to pass it off to ChatGPT without making you swap apps. Writing Tools also gain a Compose button powered by ChatGPT for writing and image generation.

Privacy-wise, Apple and OpenAI do not require an account, requests are not stored, model training is disabled by default, and IP addresses are obscured. The rollout adds localized English for the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa, while Chinese, Japanese, French, and others are slated for an April update.

Why it matters

Apple took the pragmatic route here, and we think it is the smartest move they could have made. Instead of delaying releases to catch up with massive frontier models on-device, Apple built a slick interface for everyday utility and outsourced the heavy lifting to ChatGPT.

For everyday users, features like Genmoji and Image Wand turn generative AI from a tech novelty into playful, low-friction habits inside apps they already open twenty times a day. You do not need to learn prompt engineering to make funny stickers for a group chat.

The downside is the risk of sidelining Siri. If every complex, genuinely impressive task requires a prompt asking to hand off the query to OpenAI, Apple risks making its own platform intelligence look like a middleman. For the industry, this sets a blueprint: phone makers can integrate top-tier third-party AI while still keeping tight control over hardware triggers and baseline user privacy.
