Apple rolls out iOS 18.2 public beta with ChatGPT and Genmoji

Published Reach 39

Apple just released the iOS 18.2 public beta, opening up the second wave of Apple Intelligence features to public testers. Users can now query ChatGPT directly through Siri without needing an account, and iPhone 16 owners get Visual Intelligence camera search. Image Playground and custom Genmoji are also included, though creative tools still sit behind a secondary waitlist.

Apple’s voice assistant has spent years telling you that it found some results on the web. Now, it is finally calling in serious reinforcements.

Apple has officially rolled out the public betas for iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS 15.2. This marks the second wave of Apple Intelligence features, bringing tools like Genmoji and Image Playground to public testers alongside the much-anticipated integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Siri taps ChatGPT, with transparent usage limits

The marquee addition in iOS 18.2 is the option to let ChatGPT step in when Siri cannot handle a query. You can use it completely free without ever creating or logging into an OpenAI account.

However, free access comes with standard boundaries. As spotted by MacRumors, Apple added an Advanced Capabilities menu inside the Settings app that displays your daily ChatGPT usage limit.

Free users get a modest pool of top-tier GPT-4o requests every 24 hours. Once that cap is reached, requests automatically downgrade to a cheaper, basic version of ChatGPT. Daily image creation through DALL-E 3 is also capped at two pictures for non-paying users.

If you want more horsepower, the Settings app now includes an upgrade path to ChatGPT Plus for $19.99 per month. Existing subscribers can simply log in, while new users are taken to OpenAI through an in-app browser sheet. The upgrade delivers five times more GPT-4o capacity, higher upload caps, and access to OpenAI’s advanced voice mode.

Visual search lands, but waitlists remain

Beyond ChatGPT, the iOS 18.2 public beta introduces Visual Intelligence for the iPhone 16 lineup, letting users point their camera to analyze physical surroundings.

Creative tools like Image Playground, Image Wand, and custom emoji creator Genmoji are also included in the beta. Meanwhile, macOS 15.2 gets many of these desktop additions, though MacRumors notes that Macs currently miss out on both Genmoji and Visual Intelligence.

Even after installing the public beta, you might still face a secondary waitlist. While ChatGPT, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence are available immediately to eligible testers, features like Genmoji and Image Playground require an extra waiting period until Apple grants access to your account.

Why it matters

For everyday iPhone owners, this is the most accessible generative AI experience on the market. There is no separate app to open and no new subscription required to get smarter answers straight from Siri or within native Writing Tools.

We think Apple’s implementation is exceptionally pragmatic. Instead of trying to build a massive frontier reasoning model on day one, Apple simply outsourced the heaviest computational load to OpenAI. Making daily limits and model downgrades visible directly in iOS Settings sets clear expectations without frustrating users.

It is also fascinating to watch Apple let users sign up for ChatGPT Plus via an in-app browser window linking directly to OpenAI, cleanly sidestepping typical App Store billing friction.

The main drawback remains Apple’s staggered rollout. Between hardware exclusivity and secondary feature waitlists, the complete Apple Intelligence vision still feels fragmented, which could test the patience of mainstream consumers waiting for a truly unified upgrade.
