Apple drops iOS 18.4 RC with priority notifications and more languages
Apple just rolled out the iOS 18.4 Release Candidate to developers ahead of an early April public release. The update adds Priority Notifications to highlight key alerts on your lock screen, brings a new Sketch style to Image Playground, and expands Apple Intelligence to simplified Chinese, French, Japanese, and more. Barring critical bugs, this is what hits your iPhone next month.

Waking up to a wall of lock screen alerts often means hunting for one critical message buried under food delivery promos and spam. With the release candidate of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4, Apple is letting its AI take over triage duty.
The update just landed for developers roughly a week after the fourth beta. Since this is an RC build, it represents the near-final code Apple plans to roll out to the public in early April, assuming no last-minute showstoppers surface.
Priority alerts and a massive language expansion
The headline Apple Intelligence feature here is Priority Notifications. The on-device system scans incoming notifications to figure out what actually needs your attention right now, grouping and pinning the critical ones into a dedicated section right at the top of your lock screen.
Apple Intelligence is also breaking out of its English-first shell. iOS 18.4 expands language support to French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese, alongside localized English for Singapore and India.
Over in creative tools, Image Playground gains a new Sketch style, letting you produce drawings that mimic rough hand-drawn pencil work instead of glossy renders.
Vision Pro hub and quick-access ambient audio
Beyond AI, the update stitches Apple's broader hardware together. There is a brand-new, standalone Vision Pro app for iPhone. Headset owners can use it to browse and download spatial content, manage device settings, and oversee guest mode experiences directly from their phone screen.
The iPad gets the Mail Categorization layout introduced on iPhone, sorting correspondence into organized tabs. Control Center gains a new Ambient Music shortcut for playing calming background sounds in a single tap, alongside a fresh batch of new emoji and a dedicated Food hub for Apple News+ subscribers.
Why it matters
We think iOS 18.4 marks the point where Apple Intelligence shifts from a demo reel into everyday utility. Fancy image generators and rewriting tools are fun, but notification triage directly solves notification fatigue that millions of smartphone users deal with every hour.
The risk, of course, is false confidence. If an on-device model buries an urgent family message or a work deadline, users will turn it off immediately. Apple's threshold for false negatives has to be near zero.
Still, bringing simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and European languages online finally opens the door for Apple to defend its high-end device sales outside North America. Turning the iPhone into a remote control dashboard for Vision Pro also reinforces the core Apple playbook: the phone remains the command center for every expensive gadget in the ecosystem.
