Amazon’s AI-powered Alexa is reportedly coming in October

Published Reach 48

Amazon is reportedly prepping a major generative AI overhaul for Alexa this October, internally dubbed "Remarkable Alexa." The new assistant can craft custom recipes, write bedtime stories, and hold more human-like conversations, though it will reportedly require a paid subscription of up to $10 a month.

For years, smart speakers have mostly been glorified kitchen timers and weather forecasters. Ask them anything beyond a set command, and you're met with a canned "I don't understand."

Amazon wants to fix that. Leaked internal documents obtained by The Washington Post show that the company plans to launch its revamped, generative AI-powered Alexa this October. That is slightly delayed from the previously rumored September launch, putting it over a year past its first public demo in September 2023.

Meet 'Remarkable Alexa' — at a monthly fee

Internally dubbed "Remarkable Alexa" or "Project Banyan," this upgraded assistant won't replace the current free service, which Amazon now calls "classic Alexa." Instead, it will live alongside it as a paid alternative that could cost up to $10 a month.

Amazon executives are reportedly finalizing the subscription structure, pricing, and official name this month. It's not Amazon's only front, either: the company is also working on a web-based AI assistant dubbed Project Metis to rival ChatGPT, while quietly building its own LLM called Olympus alongside its $4 billion investment in Anthropic.

Custom bedtime stories and AI news briefings

So what does gen AI actually do inside an Echo speaker? Instead of repeating pre-programmed responses, Alexa can now generate content on the fly.

For example, instead of pulling a generic recipe from the web, it can draft one based strictly on what's in your pantry or tailored to dietary restrictions. It can write poems, draft emails, and invent custom bedtime stories starring your family dog. The new assistant will also recognize individual voices, ask about personal preferences, and speak with a more conversational, human-like voice.

Another flagship feature is "Smart Briefing," which uses AI to synthesize daily news recaps. Interestingly, documents indicate internal concerns regarding whether the AI can handle sensitive political coverage accurately ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

Why it matters

We think this launch highlights the awkward spot legacy voice assistants find themselves in. Screen-bound tools like ChatGPT are brilliant thinkers, but they can't turn off your living room lights or run smart home automations. Alexa has the smart-home footprint, but up to now, it lacked the brains.

For everyday users, the concept of a truly conversational home assistant is appealing, but asking up to $10 a month is a steep gamble. Consumers bought cheap Echo speakers assuming the service was free forever. Unless the AI features radically change household utility, paying Netflix money for an upgraded voice assistant will be a tough sell.

For Amazon, this is also about basic survival. Alexa and the hardware unit have historically bled money. With Apple integrating ChatGPT into a revamped Siri for 2025 and Google transitioning Assistant to Gemini, Amazon has to prove that generative AI can finally turn its millions of smart speakers into a real, recurring software business.
