Amazon unveils Alexa+ with agentic powers
Amazon just introduced Alexa+, a major generative AI overhaul of its smart assistant powered by Amazon Bedrock. It can autonomously orchestrate across thousands of third-party apps to book appointments, order food, or manage smart homes with full context memory. Why it matters: It shifts Alexa from a simple voice remote into a proactive personal agent, and Prime members get it for free ($19.99/month otherwise).

For the past few years, smart speakers have mostly gathered dust as glorified egg timers and weather forecasters. Say something slightly too casual or ask a two-part question, and you were almost guaranteed a robotic apology.
Amazon wants to change that. The retail giant just rolled out Alexa+, a next-generation assistant powered by generative AI running on Amazon Bedrock. It is designed to converse like a real person, remember your life, and take action in the real world.
Brains meet hands
Under the hood, Alexa+ is not just a chatbot wired to a speaker. Amazon built an architecture around what it calls “experts”—coordinated groups of APIs, systems, and instructions capable of orchestrating across tens of thousands of services.
That means it can talk to your Philips Hue bulbs or Roborock vacuums, book tables through OpenTable, order delivery via Grubhub and Uber Eats, and juggle music across Spotify or Apple Music without missing a beat. It even comes with four distinct personality styles: Brief, Chill, Sweet, and Sassy.
More interestingly, Amazon is introducing agentic web browsing. If your oven breaks down, you won't need to babysit an app. Alexa+ can independently scour Thumbtack, identify a repair service, handle authentication, book the appointment, and simply notify you when the job is scheduled.
It also handles multimedia context. You can forward a school newsletter or upload a photo of a concert flyer from the Alexa mobile app or Alexa.com, and Alexa+ will automatically extract the dates and populate your calendar.
The $20 subscription you might already own
Standalone access to Alexa+ will cost $19.99 per month. But Amazon dropped a massive sweetener: it is completely free for all Amazon Prime members.
The feature begins rolling out in the United States over the coming weeks across mobile, web, Fire TV, and the global footprint of more than 600 million Alexa-enabled devices.
Why it matters
If you already pay for Prime, this is a no-brainer upgrade. Instead of paying OpenAI or Anthropic twenty bucks a month for high-tier models, you are getting an everyday household agent bundled into the shipping perk you already use.
For the tech industry, Amazon is executing a classic ecosystem play. While OpenAI and Google scramble to figure out standalone consumer monetization, Amazon is treating frontier AI as a retention moat. By absorbing the compute cost inside Prime, Amazon creates an incentive for users to buy more groceries, stream more shows, and keep their credit cards hooked to the marketplace.
However, giving an LLM autonomous agency to authenticate accounts and book paid services on the open web comes with obvious hazards. If Alexa+ misinterprets a repair quote or books the wrong vendor behind the scenes, user trust will crater fast. We think the strategy is commercially brilliant, but executing reliable autonomous agent workflows across millions of households will be Amazon's real test.
