Amazon combines Rufus and Alexa+ into an agentic shopping assistant

Published Reach 53

Amazon just launched Alexa for Shopping, merging its Rufus shopping assistant with Alexa+'s cross-device memory into a single AI agent. The new tool lets shoppers ask direct questions in the main search bar, view up to a year of price history, automate recurring reorders, and complete off-site purchases via Buy for Me. It is free for all U.S. customers with no Prime membership required.

Picture this: you brainstorm homemade volcano ideas for your kid's science fair with your Echo speaker in the living room. The next morning, you open the Amazon app and type, "suggest supplies for the project we talked about." The materials are instantly in your cart, ready for same-day delivery.

On Wednesday, Amazon officially rolled out "Alexa for Shopping," a personalized AI assistant powered by Alexa+. It replaces Rufus, the shopping assistant Amazon introduced in 2024, by merging retail search with the conversational context of smart home devices.

The feature is now live for all U.S. shoppers across the Amazon mobile app, website, and Echo Show smart displays, with no Prime membership or hardware purchase required.

The search bar gets an agentic brain

Instead of hunting for keywords or tapping separate chat bubbles, Amazon brought conversational AI straight into its primary search bar.

You can ask broad lifestyle questions like planning a themed party, compare products side by side from search results, or simply ask, "When did I last order AA batteries?" The search engine now parses the intent and pulls answers directly from your account history and product catalog data.

Shoppers also get dynamic product comparisons and up to a full year of official price history across hundreds of millions of items, rendering external price-tracking extensions largely unnecessary.

Routine restocks can now be automated through natural language. Shoppers can tap a plus icon in chat to set triggers like, "Add this sunscreen to my cart if it drops to $10 and I haven't bought it in two months." Through Shop Direct and the agentic "Buy for Me" tool, Alexa for Shopping can even purchase eligible items from third-party websites using your saved billing and shipping details.

Merging two fragmented worlds

Amazon noted that Rufus helped over 300 million shoppers research and compare goods in 2025. Yet Rufus was trapped inside the retail app, completely unaware of your household routines, while Alexa+ managed family calendars and devices without a tight retail feedback loop.

Blending them solves that friction. If your dishwasher flashes an E07 error code, the assistant recalls that you previously researched detergent for a Bosch machine on your Echo Show, diagnoses a drying fault, and walks you through troubleshooting steps.

Echo Show displays are also getting an overhaul, presenting the full Amazon storefront navigable by voice, touch, or both simultaneously.

Why it matters

For everyday shoppers, this turns fragmented browsing into hands-off execution. A built-in 12-month price chart removes fake discounts during sales events, while conditional buying turns tedious restocks into passive background tasks. It costs nothing extra and requires zero technical setup.

The tradeoff lies in privacy and agency. Letting an assistant link casual kitchen chats to automated credit card checkouts across third-party storefronts will inevitably trigger skepticism around unintended purchases and deep data profiling.

For the retail industry, Amazon is setting a defensive moat against generic AI agents. While search engines and standalone chatbots scramble to partner with stores, Amazon controls the product database, the home microphone, and the fulfillment vans. Merging conversation with instantaneous execution keeps users buying inside Amazon's orbit before they ever think to search elsewhere.
