Amazon drops Alexa+ with web chat and Prime perks

Published Reach 40

Amazon just rolled out Alexa+, a generative AI revamp of its voice assistant that supports natural back-and-forth conversations and typing to chat right on the web. Prime members get full access across Echo devices for free, while anyone can try a daily limited version in browser. It is currently available in the U.S. in English and Spanish.

For years, that Echo speaker on your kitchen counter has mostly been relegated to setting pasta timers and checking the morning weather. Amazon wants to change that.

Amazon rolled out Alexa+, a major generative AI overhaul of its voice assistant. Beyond giving it a smarter brain, Amazon added something long overdue: you can now type to chat with Alexa directly in your desktop browser at alexa.amazon.com.

Conversations are no longer trapped inside a single speaker. You can start talking to an Echo in the living room, pick up right where you left off on your phone, and continue the thread by typing on your laptop.

Talking like a real person, even in your browser

The original Alexa notoriously stumbled whenever you gave it more than one command at a time. Alexa+ handles natural back-and-forth dialogue, lets you interrupt mid-sentence, and adapts when you abruptly switch topics.

It retains your preferences over time, whether that means pulling up tailored recipes, recommending shows on Prime Video, or generating custom bedtime stories for your kids. Smart home routines also get a lot more intuitive: saying things like "wake me up with lights and coffee at 7 AM" works as a single prompt, and the system can proactively ping you if a door was left unlocked.

For households with children, Amazon added dedicated child profiles with parental consent and voice recognition, automatically applying stricter guardrails when a child speaks.

Pricing and device compatibility

Amazon is using Alexa+ primarily as a massive loyalty perk to defend its Prime subscription.

If you are an active Prime member, full access to Alexa+ across all supported devices, the mobile app, and the web is completely free. No add-on fee required.

If you do not have Prime but still want Alexa+ on your Echo devices, you will have to shell out $19.99 a month for a standalone Standard plan, which bundles 1TB of cloud storage. Non-Prime users can still test the waters for free on the web and the Alexa app, but access is capped by daily usage limits.

Hardware compatibility has its limits. Legacy gear like the first-generation Echo, Echo Dot, and original Echo Show are left behind on the legacy Alexa. The rollout is also currently limited to users in the U.S. in English and Spanish.

Why it matters

We think Amazon made a very clever move by avoiding the trap of launching yet another isolated chatbot wrapper. Instead, it piped frontier conversational AI straight into its existing retail and smart home flywheel.

Adding web chat quietly bridges Alexa into daily desktop workflows. You can research products or plan a schedule at your desk during the day, then control your living room via voice at night without losing context.

For Prime members, this feels like an instant, high-value freebie that deepens lock-in. Meanwhile, the aggressive $19.99 monthly price tag for non-Prime users makes standalone access look like a terrible deal, subtly nudging everyone toward a full Prime subscription.

With hundreds of millions of ambient devices already sitting in living rooms, Amazon just showed Google and Apple how fast an existing hardware footprint can be turned into an everyday AI beachhead.
