Amazon plans ChatGPT-like overhaul for Alexa

Published Reach 33

Amazon is working to give Alexa a generative AI makeover using its own internal large language models, according to leaked documents. The upgraded voice assistant aims to move beyond simple database queries to spin up personalized bedtime stories from toys in view and track down TV shows from vague descriptions. Why it matters: After heavy hardware layoffs, Amazon is betting that conversational AI can finally make Alexa proactive and profitable.

Amazon's smart speakers have spent the last decade trapped in a loop of setting kitchen timers and reading the weather. Now, leaked documents show the company is finally ready to drag Alexa into the ChatGPT era.

According to internal documents obtained by Insider, Amazon is preparing to overhaul Alexa with generative AI and large language models. The goal is to transform the assistant from a glorified database query tool into an entity that genuinely feels like it is thinking.

Bedtime stories and soft-selling subscriptions

One leaked concept shows an eight-year-old asking Alexa for a story about a cat and the moon. In classic ChatGPT fashion, Alexa invents a tale on the fly about Mittens, the first cat to travel to space.

Even better, on an Echo Show, the camera spots the child clutching an Olaf toy from Frozen and instantly weaves the snowman into the narrative. Amazon is already floating potential brand collaborations with Disney and Lego to flesh this out.

Another demo targets entertainment search. A user asks Alexa to find that HBO or Netflix show where rich people go on vacation to Sicily or Hawaii, and Alexa nails it: The White Lotus. When asked about the cast, it delivers the answer, flags an active HBO free trial on FireTV, quotes the post-trial price, and asks if the viewer wants to subscribe through Prime Video Channels.

In-house models meet heavy layoffs

While Microsoft outsourced its AI intelligence to OpenAI, Amazon is doubling down on proprietary tech. The assistant is powered by what the company calls the Alexa Teacher Model.

An Amazon spokesperson told Insider that while Alexa has used the Teacher model for years, the company is building much larger, more generalized, and capable models to make the assistant more conversational and proactive.

Yet this pivot lands at a brutal moment. Amazon recently gutted its Devices and Services division, cutting nearly 2,000 jobs across hardware and Alexa projects as part of company-wide layoffs.

Why it matters

We think this is Amazon's best shot at finally solving Alexa's notorious monetization problem. Selling low-margin Echo pucks never made sense without a clear backend payoff, and voice-shopping for batteries never caught on. Turning the assistant into a personalized storyteller and a conversational storefront for Prime Video Channels gives Amazon a direct line to recurring revenue.

For consumers with an Echo on their counter, a conversational upgrade is desperately needed. Contextual, multi-modal features like using a camera to spot a toy and write a bedtime story feel like the natural future of smart home tech.

However, Amazon's path is fraught with risk. Laying off 2,000 employees from the exact hardware and voice division tasked with executing this pivot is a massive morale and bandwidth hit. Relying entirely on in-house models rather than partnering with frontier labs also means Amazon must prove its models can match the conversational chops of GPT-4 and Google Bard, or risk rendering millions of home devices even more obsolete.
