Adobe just rolled out the web version of Adobe Express with Firefly out of beta, bringing its generative AI creative tools to everyone for free. Adobe is taking its biggest swing yet at browser-based design.
Adobe officially took the new version of Adobe Express featuring its Firefly generative AI out of beta. The updated tool is now available worldwide on desktop web for free, with a mobile rollout promised soon.
Originally launched as Adobe Spark before a 2021 rebrand, Express is Adobe's all-in-one editor built for images, PDFs, and quick video edits.
Generative AI directly in your browser
Bringing Firefly into Express means users no longer need standalone AI generators to make quick visuals.
Creators can now generate high-quality images directly inside the editor using text prompts in over 100 languages. Adobe says millions of people are already using the platform.
Getting started doesn't require a paid Creative Cloud subscription—anyone with a free Adobe ID can jump into the desktop web app.
For paying members, Adobe is offering Express Premium, which lets teams pull assets directly from Photoshop and Illustrator or keep linked files in sync across different apps. There is also an Enterprise tier that integrates with Adobe Experience Cloud. Enterprise early adopters like Prudential Financial noted that it lets non-design teams handle basic visual tasks without bogging down core creative staff.
Why it matters
We think this is Adobe's most direct counterattack against Canva to date.
For everyday marketers, small business owners, and creators who find Photoshop too expensive or intimidating, getting Firefly baked into a free browser tool is genuinely compelling. It is definitely worth testing right now if you need fast social graphics or basic layout work.
Adobe's strategy looks clever here: make the AI frictionless to capture casual users, while using live asset syncing to hook professional teams into staying inside the Creative Cloud ecosystem. However, mobile availability remains a glaring gap at launch. In the fast-moving social content space, creators work from their phones, and until the updated mobile app drops, rivals like Canva still hold the edge on convenience.
