Adobe brings Firefly to video editing

Published Reach 45

Adobe just announced that its Firefly generative AI is expanding to Creative Cloud video and audio apps. While it cannot generate videos from scratch yet, users will soon be able to color grade clips with simple text prompts, generate background audio, and automatically turn scripts into storyboards.

If you have ever tried color grading a video, you know it is basically dark magic. Moving curves and color wheels around to capture a specific sunset can easily eat up your entire afternoon.

Adobe is trying to fix that. A month after debuting its generative AI model Firefly for still images, the company just announced that Firefly is coming to its Creative Cloud video and audio apps.

To be clear, Firefly will not generate entire videos from text prompts just yet. Instead, Adobe wants to automate the most tedious parts of video post-production.

Color grading with a text prompt

The most impressive feature in the pipeline is text-based color grading. Instead of wrestling with complex LUTs or color panels, editors can simply type phrases like "golden hour" or "brighten face," and the software adjusts the shot to match the mood.

Firefly will also generate custom music and ambient sound effects from text descriptions. Finding royalty-free audio tracks that match a scene's pacing has always been a pain, and this could eliminate that friction entirely.

Text and graphic styling are getting the same treatment. By typing what you want, Firefly can generate animated subtitles, title cards, and motion logos—tasks that normally require serious After Effects skills.

It can also analyze your timeline and automatically recommend relevant B-roll footage to liven up dry cuts.

Turning scripts into storyboards

Beyond basic editing tweaks, Adobe wants Firefly inside the pre-production workflow.

The tool is designed to read text scripts and automatically generate storyboards along with pre-visualizations. For creators pitching video concepts or planning shoots, this turns written outlines into visual mockups in minutes.

Keep in mind that these capabilities are currently just company demos. We have yet to see how reliably they handle messy real-world timelines.

Adobe is also sticking to its commercially safe promise. Firefly is trained only on Adobe Stock content and public domain material, ensuring enterprise users avoid copyright headaches, even if that limits its raw creative range compared to tools like Midjourney.

Why it matters

While AI startups like Runway race to generate entire video clips from scratch, those clips are still too short, messy, and unpredictable for serious commercial productions.

We think Adobe's strategy here is exceptionally sharp. Rather than trying to replace the camera, it is sprinkling generative AI across the exact choke points that slow professional editors down: color matching, temp tracks, lower-thirds, and B-roll hunting.

For independent creators and corporate marketing teams, this lowers the technical bar dramatically. Achieving a cinematic look without hiring a dedicated colorist could save thousands of dollars per project.

The real risk is control. Professional editors are notoriously picky about pixel-level precision. If prompt-based grading does not offer intuitive granular overrides, pros will ignore it, leaving it as a tool mainly for casual creators.

Still, by embedding these assistants directly inside Premiere and After Effects, Adobe is making sure editors do not have to leave their existing timeline to get the benefits of modern AI.
