Taco Bell's drive-thru AI is expanding
Yum! Brands just announced plans to expand its "Voice AI" ordering system to hundreds of Taco Bell drive-thrus in the US by the end of 2024. The tech has been tested across 100+ stores for two years to cut wait times and ease worker workload. Why it matters: While McDonald's recently retreated from drive-thru AI tests, Yum! is aggressively pushing forward.

Your next late-night Taco Bell run might be taken by a bot.
Taco Bell parent Yum! Brands announced plans to expand its Voice AI ordering tech to hundreds of US drive-thru locations by the end of 2024. According to Bloomberg, the company has already been quietly testing the system at more than 100 locations for roughly two years. Yum! is also trialing the tech at five KFC restaurants in Australia.
Fast food's high-stakes drive-thru gamble
With over 7,400 Taco Bell locations across the US, rollout to a few hundred stores is still relatively cautious. Yum! pitches the system as a win-win that eases staff workloads, speeds up lines, and improves order accuracy while boosting franchisee profits.
Yet the broader fast-food industry has seen mixed luck with voice bots. McDonald's recently pulled the plug on its drive-thru AI test, while Wendy's has embraced the tech with enthusiasm. Roaring engines, mufflers, and custom orders make drive-thrus surprisingly hostile environments for AI.
Why it matters
Drive-thru automation is where conversational AI meets reality: high noise, high speed, and zero tolerance for mistakes. One misheard Chalupa order, and you lose a customer.
In our view, Yum! taking two full years of testing before scaling to hundreds of locations shows a much smarter, measured approach than McDonald's hasty retreat. If Yum! proves Voice AI can actually lower stress for kitchen crews without frustrating hungry drivers, it will force the rest of the industry to jump back on the automation bandwagon.
