Suno adds negative prompts to filter out unwanted styles
Suno just rolled out an Exclude Styles feature, giving creators a negative prompt tool to ban specific instruments, genres, or vocal types like male vocals from tracks. Excluded tags appear with a minus sign in the song details. It is currently locked behind Pro and Premier tiers.
AI song generators are notorious for adding instruments or vocal chops you never asked for.
Suno just rolled out an Exclude Styles feature, giving users a way to filter out unwanted elements before hitting generate.
Negative prompting comes to audio
Pro and Premier subscribers can now find an Exclude Styles toggle inside the Custom creation tab.
Turning it on allows you to block specific instruments, musical genres, or vocal arrangements. You can type in things you want to avoid, such as specific instruments or male and female vocals.
Once a song is generated, any blocked elements will appear in the preview sidebar and song details page with a minus sign, such as "-piano".
Suno also shared a workflow tip for cleaner vocal tracks: add [female vocals] to your lyrics prompt while explicitly excluding "male vocals" in the new field.
Why it matters
Until now, prompting music generators felt a lot like playing a slot machine where you had to pray the AI wouldn't throw a random saxophone solo into your ambient track.
Borrowing negative prompting from image models gives power users a direct way to reduce output randomness without burning through daily credits.
Restricting the switch to paid tiers shows Suno knows where its leverage is. We think giving creators fine-grained elimination tools is exactly how novelty AI toys mature into dependable creative utilities.
