OpenAI may be launching a ChatGPT-powered search engine next week

Published Reach 47

OpenAI just sparked speculation about a direct challenge to Google after registering the search.chatgpt.com domain. Reports indicate an official announcement could arrive as early as May 9. Rather than relying on clunky Bing add-ons, the new tool aims to deeply integrate real-time web retrieval directly into ChatGPT to rethink the traditional search experience.

Search for anything on Google today and you will likely get hit with a wall of ads followed by ten familiar blue links. For over two decades, that formula has handed Google a staggering 90% share of the global search market.

Now, OpenAI looks ready to challenge that empire directly.

Rumors started flying after the registration of a new domain: search.chatgpt.com. Reports suggest OpenAI is preparing a major announcement for May 9, and all signs point toward a dedicated AI-powered search engine built right on top of ChatGPT.

Beyond ten blue links

ChatGPT can already browse the live web through a partnership with Microsoft Bing, but anyone who uses it knows the reality: it feels like a clunky add-on. It is often slow, spotty, and fails when you need it most.

Large language models naturally suffer from knowledge cut-off dates. While expanding context windows helps, the only real fix for real-time awareness is live web crawling. Competitors like Google, Bing, and Perplexity already run specialized spiders around the clock to feed fresh data back into their models.

Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at this shift during an interview with Lex Fridman. He openly stated that showing 13 ads and ten blue links is just one way to find information, but AI could unlock something fundamentally better.

Altman pointed out that nobody has truly cracked the code on deeply combining large language models with search yet, and added that OpenAI would love to go solve it.

Why it matters

We think a purpose-built search experience inside ChatGPT could finally eliminate the constant context-switching between chatbots and traditional browsers. If OpenAI can serve real-time facts without the annoying latency or failed browsing loops of its current Bing plugin, power users and researchers will have an incredible tool on day one.

For the broader industry, this takes the fight directly to Google’s home turf. Google has moved cautiously with generative search because radical changes threaten the golden goose of ad-supported search results; an unconstrained rival like OpenAI has no legacy cash cow to protect.

That said, building a true search engine is an immense undertaking. Indexing the entire web and keeping it fresh takes massive compute infrastructure and years of refinement. If OpenAI is quietly leaning on third-party scrapers or Bing beneath the hood, it may struggle to deliver the reliability people expect from a true Google alternative.
