OpenAI may have quietly rolled out ChatGPT search
OpenAI just stealthily upgraded ChatGPT's web search with the GPT-4o rollout. The free tier now explicitly tells you when it searches the web, lists the exact sites it crawled, and surfaces direct citations instead of hallucinating links.

Everyone was waiting for OpenAI to officially launch its rumored Google killer last week. The event came and went, with all eyes on GPT-4o's voice and vision tricks, but zero mention of a search engine.
Now it looks like OpenAI may have sneaked ChatGPT Search out the door anyway.
Search by stealth in GPT-4o
Users on the free tier of GPT-4o are noticing a fresh behavior when asking about recent news. ChatGPT actively displays a status saying it is "Searching the web."
A few seconds later, it updates to "Searched X sites" alongside a clickable list of the actual sources it reviewed. These are real pages, not hallucinated URLs.
SMX speaker Dave Davies shared on X that the model crawls links directly and summarizes their contents on the fly. In tests conducted by Search Engine Land, ChatGPT cited multiple distinct links from 9to5Google and Search Engine Land with prominent source buttons.
Under the hood, OpenAI is likely leveraging retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to reframe user prompts into queries against Bing. Remember that OpenAI also launched its own web crawler, GPTBot, back in August.
Not another boring Google
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously said that Google's traditional search interface is boring and the world does not need a clone. This quiet rollout proves he meant it.
Unlike traditional engines that output ten blue links, ChatGPT integrates real-time browsing directly into the conversation. It synthesizes an answer first and gives clear citations on the side.
The clean presentation stands in stark contrast to Google's rocky rollout of AI Overviews, which has faced immediate backlash from users and publishers alike.
Why it matters
OpenAI is playing the classic underdog playbook that Google used twenty years ago against legacy web portals.
Instead of launching a standalone "SearchGPT" app and inviting direct regulatory and competitive fire from Mountain View, OpenAI simply made live retrieval the default experience inside GPT-4o. If you need quick facts or summaries of breaking news today, it already works well enough to replace standard web queries for routine tasks.
For publishers and website owners, the stakes just flipped. Many sites previously blocked GPTBot to prevent their content from being scraped for model training. But because ChatGPT now prominently links to original reporting, keeping those crawler blocks active might mean shutting yourself out of the next major source of web traffic.
We think this stealth approach is brilliant. By embedding search quietly into an already wildly popular chatbot, OpenAI is reshaping user habits without ever asking anyone to switch engines.
