OpenAI takes on Google with native ChatGPT search

Published Reach 51

OpenAI just built web search directly into ChatGPT, serving up real-time answers with clickable source citations. Instead of sending you off to a traditional search engine, it blends conversational chat with live sports scores, weather, and breaking news. Why it matters: It turns ChatGPT into a full-blown search engine alternative backed by official publisher partnerships.

Whenever you needed to check live sports scores or breaking news, you used to close ChatGPT and head back to a sea of blue links on Google.

OpenAI is trying to end that habit for good. The company just rolled out ChatGPT search, bringing real-time web browsing natively into its flagship chatbot.

Plus and Team subscribers, alongside SearchGPT waitlist members, got access immediately. Enterprise and Edu tiers follow in the coming weeks, while free users will see it rollout over the coming months. OpenAI even threw in a Chrome extension that lets you set ChatGPT as your default browser search engine.

Search that feels like a conversation

Instead of clunky browsing plugins, web search is now built directly into the prompt bar.

ChatGPT automatically decides whether to search the web based on your prompt, though you can also force it manually by clicking a dedicated globe icon. Once it answers, you can ask follow-up questions just like a normal chat, and the model maintains full context while pulling in fresh information.

Sources are prominent this time around. Clicking a new Sources button below the answer pops open a sidebar with links to the original articles and blog posts. OpenAI also added custom visual widgets for common lookups like weather, stock quotes, sports scores, and maps.

Under the hood, the engine runs on a fine-tuned GPT-4o model post-trained with novel synthetic data techniques, including distillation from OpenAI o1-preview. The system pulls from third-party search providers as well as proprietary feeds from media partners.

Publishers inside the tent

Rather than waging war on newsrooms, OpenAI spent months signing content deals to prepare for launch day.

Publishers on board include Reuters, the Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Financial Times, Le Monde, News Corp, Time, and Vox Media. OpenAI made sure to note that any publisher can opt in or out of search indexing.

In a Reddit AMA the same day, CEO Sam Altman admitted that compute bottlenecks mean OpenAI cannot ship as many things in parallel as it wants. Altman confirmed that nothing called GPT-5 is coming this year, noting the company is currently focused on prioritizing the o1 reasoning series.

Why it matters

This is arguably the most impactful change to how people will use ChatGPT day to day.

For everyday users and researchers, eliminating the knowledge cutoff without clunky browsing lag is massive. Getting synthesized answers with verified source links in a single pane is worth using right away, especially since you can dig deeper through conversational follow-ups instead of re-crafting search keywords.

For the broader industry, OpenAI is stepping directly into the territory that powers traditional search engines. It accelerates the shift from hunting through ranked links to consuming synthesised answers. If chat becomes the front door to the internet, ad-supported search empires face a real existential test.

OpenAI played this smartly by locking in major news publishers early, shielding itself from immediate copyright blowback while securing reliable citations. The Chrome extension is a bold grab for URL bar real estate.

However, we believe keeping the service fast and financially sustainable will be challenging. Relying partly on third-party search indexes means OpenAI does not fully own its retrieval layer yet, and scaling live web queries across hundreds of millions of free users will test their computing infrastructure like never before.
