ChatGPT Search is now free for everyone without signing in

OpenAI just opened up ChatGPT Search to the public without requiring an account or login. Anyone visiting the site can now type a query to get real-time news, sports scores, and stock quotes directly from the web, though switching to the reasoning mode still requires signing in.

OpenAI just dropped the sign-up requirement for ChatGPT Search, making its real-time web querying feature completely free and accessible to anyone without an account.

The feature, which originally launched back in October 2024, is now front and center when you land on the website. Instead of hitting a login wall, you are greeted with a search box asking what you need help with, putting OpenAI in direct, friction-free competition with traditional search engines.

No login, no barrier

When you type a query into the text box, you will notice two toggles at the bottom: Search and Reason.

Clicking Search gives you immediate web results without asking who you are. If you want to use the Reason mode, the site will still prompt you to sign up or log in. To match the change, the login buttons have been shoved off to the sides.

Unlike base model training data, the search tool pulls live information like sports scores, breaking news, and stock quotes. However, as CNET pointed out, hallucinations are still a real risk, so checking the provided source links remains essential.

Sam Altman celebrated the rollout on X by retweeting the announcement with a simple caption: "Make search great again."

This push for broad access comes amid intense competition from Google, which is currently testing an internal AI Mode for search, alongside pressure from Anthropic and DeepSeek. Even Microsoft recently began offering OpenAI's o1 reasoning model for free through a Think Deeper toggle in Copilot, bypassing OpenAI's usual paywalls that can run up to $200.

Why it matters

We think this is the moment ChatGPT officially becomes a utility rather than just a destination app.

For regular users, the value is instant convenience. You do not have to hand over an email address or remember a password just to look up a quick fact, which makes it an easy replacement for your standard browser search bar starting today.

For the search industry, this is an existential shift. Google's real moat has never just been its index, but the absolute lack of friction required to get an answer; by removing the login wall, OpenAI finally matches that zero-friction entry point.

Strategically, this is a brilliant top-of-funnel play. Free search brings in massive volume, while the Reason toggle sits right there to upsell engaged users on signing up for advanced models like o1 or o3 mini.

That said, the move carries real infrastructure and reputation risks. Running live web-grounded inference for millions of anonymous visitors is brutally expensive, and if bad hallucinations slip through to casual users who do not bother checking the links, OpenAI will have to wear the blame.
