OpenAI bumps o1 rate limits

Published Reach 50

OpenAI just boosted usage limits for its o1 reasoning models for Plus and Team subscribers. The lightweight o1-mini gets a 7x increase from 50 messages per week to 50 per day, while the costlier o1-preview bumps from 30 to 50 messages weekly. It means power users can finally test complex logic and coding tasks without constantly watching the clock.

Anyone trying to put OpenAI’s new o1 models through their paces over the past few days ran into the same frustrating wall: strict weekly message caps.

OpenAI just announced that it is raising rate limits for both o1-preview and o1-mini for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers.

A sevenfold bump for mini

The biggest relief comes to o1-mini. OpenAI boosted its limits sevenfold, moving from 50 messages per week to 50 messages per day.

Meanwhile, the heavier o1-preview model gets a smaller bump, expanding from 30 messages per week to 50 messages per week. OpenAI noted that o1-preview remains significantly more expensive to serve.

Why it matters

A daily quota of 50 prompts makes o1-mini practical for daily coding and math troubleshooting. A weekly cap previously meant you could easily burn your entire allocation in an hour of debugging.

It also highlights the stark economics of test-time compute. Bumping o1-preview by just 20 prompts a week shows that full-blown reasoning models remain intensely resource-heavy to run at scale.
