OpenAI lifts 5-hour limits on ChatGPT Work as users top 6M
OpenAI just temporarily lifted the 5-hour usage limit on Codex and ChatGPT Work for all Plus, Business, and Pro subscribers after hitting 6 million active users. The team is also rolling out efficiency updates to GPT 5.6 Sol to curb token consumption, giving heavy users significantly more runway before hitting hard caps.

Codex and ChatGPT Work have had a wild 48 hours, and OpenAI is opening the taps to celebrate hitting 6 million active users.
Lifting the cap and tuning the engine
OpenAI has temporarily removed the 5-hour usage limit across all Plus, Business, and Pro plans.
To give users a clean slate, the team also pushed an immediate usage reset across the platform.
Alongside the uncapping, OpenAI is rolling out efficiency updates to GPT 5.6 Sol. The tweaks are designed to make the model sip less quota per run so users can get more done before hitting walls. OpenAI noted that the exact impact will be measured and shared soon.
Why it matters
For developers and power users living inside Codex and ChatGPT Work, removing the 5-hour ceiling means complex projects won't get abruptly cut off mid-stride.
Making GPT 5.6 Sol more efficient is also a clever maneuver. Instead of just throwing raw compute at the server crunch, trimming the model's footprint lets OpenAI ease backend strain while making paid subscriptions feel noticeably more generous.
That said, we think users should keep in mind this is explicitly a temporary fix. It looks like a controlled pressure test during a traffic surge, so enjoy the unlimited runway while it lasts before normal guardrails return.
