ChatGPT Business gets a 5x usage boost

Published Reach 39

OpenAI just rolled out Premium seats for ChatGPT Business, aimed at power users hitting workflow bottlenecks. Priced at $125 per month (or $100 billed annually), it delivers 5x more usage than Standard seats, scraps the five-hour usage cap, and introduces predictable weekly resets. Why it matters: Teams can now mix and match standard and heavy-duty seats in one workspace without juggling multiple accounts.

If you are the heaviest AI user on your team, you know the pain of hitting a usage limit right when you are deep in the zone. You are debugging complex code or parsing thousands of customer reviews, and suddenly ChatGPT tells you to take a five-hour break.

OpenAI is finally rolling out a fix for that headache. The company launched Premium seats for ChatGPT Business, officially making them available following an early rollout.

Five times the capacity with no five-hour lockouts

The headline feature of the Premium seat is raw capacity. It offers five times the usage of a Standard seat and completely removes the five-hour usage cap.

Usage resets on a predictable weekly cadence. If a true power user somehow manages to burn through that five-fold ceiling, workspace owners can top up with shared workspace credits so high-priority work never grinds to a halt.

Naturally, that power comes at a steep price hike. A Premium seat costs $125 per user per month on a monthly billing cycle, or $100 per user per month billed annually. Standard seats stay at $25 monthly or $20 annually. In short, five times the usage costs exactly five times the money.

To jumpstart adoption, OpenAI ran a promotion giving the first 10,000 eligible workspace owners $100 in workspace credits per Premium seat added, capped at $500 for five seats, which wrapped up on August 20.

Mixing seats without breaking the budget

The smartest part of this rollout is that OpenAI is not forcing an all-or-nothing upgrade. Organizations can mix and match Standard and Premium seats inside the exact same Business workspace.

That means casual users who draft a few emails a week stay on the $20 tier, while engineers building across massive codebases with Codex get the $100 seat.

Admins can reassign seats as project priorities shift, set workspace spend limits, and monitor consumption all in one central dashboard without creating separate accounts or exposing proprietary data across isolated subscriptions.

Why it matters

For enterprise buyers, the biggest barrier to AI adoption has often been rigid licensing. Making everyone pay top-dollar enterprise fees makes no sense when only a handful of people are pushing the models to their limits.

If you have developers, data leads, or marketers whose daily throughput depends directly on prompt volume, testing a couple of Premium seats is an easy call. The time saved from eliminating the five-hour cooldown easily offsets the extra $80 a month.

We think this move shows OpenAI maturing into a serious enterprise software vendor. Running frontier intelligence on heavy workloads is brutally expensive, and blanket unlimited plans are mathematically unsustainable.

By creating a distinct premium tier and allowing granular seat allocation, OpenAI protects its compute margins while giving power teams what they need. Expect rival enterprise tools to quickly copy this mixed-seat playbook as high-compute AI becomes the norm.
