ChatGPT gets organized with Projects
OpenAI just launched Projects for ChatGPT, letting users group related chats, custom context, and files into dedicated workspaces. The update integrates directly with Canvas and web search for multi-step tasks, rolling out now to Plus, Pro, and Teams subscribers before reaching Enterprise users next year.
If your ChatGPT sidebar looks like an endless, chaotic graveyard of forgotten brainstorming sessions, OpenAI finally has some relief for you.
On Day 7 of its "12 Days of OpenAI" livestream event, the company rolled out Projects — a new organizational workspace designed to group chats, files, and custom instructions together. The update is already live for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers across the web and Windows desktop app. Enterprise and Edu tiers will get it in January, with free users to follow.
Fancy folders with shared brains
At a glance, Projects acts like a folder system right on your sidebar. You can create a project, give it a title, pick a custom color icon, and drag past or new chats inside.
Under the hood, though, it functions a lot like a localized, private version of Custom GPTs. Each project allows you to upload dedicated files and define project-level custom instructions. That means ChatGPT remembers the background context across every conversation you have inside that project, without you having to re-prompt it each time.
OpenAI also baked in its ChatGPT Search and Canvas tools directly. In the livestream, CPO Kevin Weil and his team showed off practical use cases: Drew Schuster organized a Secret Santa gift exchange by uploading requests, matching participants, and drafting an email blast, then queried home appliance notes to check when his fridge filter needed changing. In another demo, Thomas Dimson built a personal site by letting ChatGPT modify code directly inside Canvas.
Why it matters
Projects isn't a flashy breakthrough like the Sora release or the $200 Pro plan, but for people who actually live inside ChatGPT for daily work, it might be the most practical update of the year.
OpenAI is essentially closing a glaring UX gap that Anthropic's Claude addressed months ago with its own Projects feature. Until now, power users had to constantly juggle copy-pasting reference docs or creating separate Custom GPTs just to keep long-term tasks organized. Having contextual memory, Canvas, and web search inside a single project folder turns ChatGPT from a disposable chatbot into a persistent workstation.
We think this is a smart pivot toward usability over pure raw model intelligence. The real test, however, will be how well OpenAI handles multi-file context and retrieval as projects grow larger. If files get ignored in long chats, users will end up back where they started: keeping everything in their notes app.
