OpenAI makes ChatGPT Plus free for US and Canada college students
OpenAI just made ChatGPT Plus, normally $20 a month, free for college students across the US and Canada through May. The push gives students access to Deep Research, large file uploads, and advanced voice features just in time for finals. With Anthropic also launching Claude for Education this week, the battle to become the next generation's default AI is officially on.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman just dropped a major perk for college students across North America.
According to Altman on X, ChatGPT Plus is now free for college students in the U.S. and Canada through the end of May.
Free Plus for finals season
Altman kept the announcement short and sweet, simply stating that college students across the two countries can tap into the premium tier without paying a cent through next month.
While specific details on how students will verify their enrollment haven't been detailed in the post, the timing couldn't be better.
ChatGPT Plus typically costs $20 a month, and this free window runs right through the thick of spring finals and term papers.
Why it matters
For students in the U.S. and Canada, this is an easy win. You get higher usage limits and frontier intelligence for research, drafting, and coding right when academic workloads peak, with zero financial commitment.
We think this is a brilliant land-grab by OpenAI. College students are at that sweet spot where workflow habits get locked in for the rest of their careers.
Giving them two months of free Plus during the most stressful stretch of the semester makes the tool indispensable. Once graduation rolls around or the fall semester kicks off, paying that $20 monthly subscription will feel like second nature.
