OpenAI drops $100 in free Codex credits for university students

Published Reach 33

OpenAI just launched a perk giving verified university students in the US and Canada $100 in free Codex credits, equivalent to 2,500 ChatGPT credits. Eligible students can claim the balance via SheerID using a school email, and the credits apply across all ChatGPT plans with a 12-month expiration. It’s an aggressive bid to hook the next generation of builders early.

OpenAI is putting compute directly into the hands of campus builders. On March 20, the company announced an offer giving verified university students in the US and Canada $100 in free Codex credits.

Extra runway for student builders

That $100 bonus equals roughly 2,500 ChatGPT credits. To grab the deal, students must be enrolled at a degree-granting college in the US or Canada and complete verification through SheerID using their university email address.

Once added to a personal ChatGPT account, the credits work seamlessly across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro tiers, letting users push past their standard usage ceilings. The grant is limited to one per student and stays valid for 12 months from the claim date.

Why it matters

This is textbook developer courtship. College campuses are hotbeds for rapid prototyping, where students use Codex to cobble together course registration bots, study platforms, and early hackathon ideas.

By covering the bill while students are still learning, OpenAI builds muscle memory for its tooling. When these builders eventually land software jobs or spin off their own tech ventures, sticking with OpenAI’s ecosystem will be second nature. Handing out $100 in credits is cheap compute for OpenAI, but it secures an incredible developer pipeline.
