Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg just announced a new top-level product group dedicated to generative AI. The team plans to build creative tools first, followed by long-term "AI personas" for WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram to assist users. Zuckerberg noted there is still plenty of foundational work to do before shipping fully fledged features.

Watching ChatGPT steal every headline and Snapchat rush out its own chatbot, Mark Zuckerberg is officially rearranging the deck at Meta to fight back.

In a post published on Monday, the Meta CEO announced the company is forming a new top-level product group entirely dedicated to generative AI. Zuckerberg said the group will start by making creative and expressive tools in the near term, with a long-term goal of developing AI personas that can assist users in various ways.

Giving chat apps a digital personality

These upcoming AI personas are destined for Meta's biggest surfaces, including chat apps like WhatsApp and Messenger, photo platforms like Instagram, and eventually video and multi-modal experiences.

Basically, instead of just building an engine that answers factual queries, Meta wants interactive characters baked right into where you already talk to friends.

Do not expect a digital twin tomorrow, though. Zuckerberg admitted there is a lot of foundational work to do before the company can ship anything truly compelling. Users will likely see simpler creative tools first, such as unique Instagram filters, while fully-fledged conversational bots will take longer to arrive.

Longtime observers know Meta has tried this before. Messenger rolled out bots back in 2016, but those rule-based scripts were clunky and nowhere near the natural dialogue ChatGPT delivers today.

Why it matters

Meta is feeling the heat. OpenAI's meteoric rise, Microsoft's swift integration of ChatGPT into Bing, and moves from peers like Snapchat and Google have forced Zuckerberg to pivot after sinking billions into his metaverse vision.

We think betting on personas is a smart play for Meta. The company does not own an operating system or a dominant search engine, but it owns the social graph. Turning AI into social companions and creator utilities plays directly to WhatsApp and Instagram's strengths rather than trying to beat Google at search.

However, the risks are high. Putting conversational agents into private direct messages brings massive safety and privacy headaches. Because Zuckerberg admitted the foundational tech is still being built, Meta looks like it is playing catch-up, and users should expect modest gimmicks before anything genuinely useful lands.
