Luma AI's Ray2 turns rough doodles into full animations

Published Reach 38

Luma AI just launched Ray2 image-to-video inside Dream Machine, letting users turn quick hand-drawn doodles and sketches into animated videos. Simply drop in scribbled characters or scenes, and the model animates them into dynamic clips. It is a neat, low-friction shortcut for creators looking to prototype animations straight from raw sketches.

From doodles to full animation

Luma AI just showcased a new image-to-video capability for its Ray2 model called Magic Doodles on Dream Machine.

Instead of requiring polished digital artwork, the feature lets users drop simple rough sketches and scribbles straight into the platform. Ray2 then brings those stationary drawings to life as animated video clips.

Luma is pitching the tool as a way to turn quick napkin sketches and hand-drawn characters into moving motion stories in just seconds.

Why it matters

Most video generators are picky eaters that need highly detailed prompts or pristine source images to avoid turning into a blurry mess. Letting users start with rough doodles dramatically lowers the barrier for quick storyboarding and visual brainstorming.

That said, sketch-to-video often struggles with consistency because simple line art lacks depth and lighting cues. We think the real test will be whether Ray2 can keep characters coherent across longer clips without drifting off-model beyond curated demo examples.
